VAR just means that everyone will be playing for and calling for penalties instead of trying to score themselves. Huge improvement to the game...

Do I detect a little bit of sarcasm there, Mark?

VAR is there for the referee to make sure he hasn’t made a clear and obvious error - if he thinks he has then he’s right to change his decision. On the whole VAR has helped the right decisions be made, I’d take a few contentious ones to get the big ones right.

    James

VAR is not making football less interesting, if it was we wouldn't be here discussing it every single day!

    Denmark 1-1 Australia

Promising from Australia as Tom Rogic plays it out to the left flank to Robbie Kruse, his cross is aiming for Leckie but Thomas Delaney hammers it clear.

Meanwhile, we have a substitution with the cautioned Yussuf Poulsen going off and Martin Braithwaite of Bordeaux is the man coming on for Denmark.

Both teams have been really good in an offensive capacity.

Australia are causing problems from the wide areas and they just need to put better quality into the penalty area or make sure that they're attacking the ball more when it arrives in the box.

Clear to me that VAR has brought to light how many fouls are actually committed, whether that's for the good or bad. Handball rule needs to be clearer now we have the clarity in decision making.

Excellent defending from Jens Stryger Larsen, stooping low to dive and head away a dangerous ball into the box under pressure. Very open, good to watch in Samara.

Just wish they would stop banning players for 2 yellows, players should only receive a ban if sent off for serious foul play. This is the World Cup not a 38 game season. It's punishment enough not winning a game.

Chance. Big chance for Denmark. Jorgensen with a clever backheel after Mark Milligan tackled Yussuf Poulsen in the penalty area. The ball then falls to Pione Sisto, but his radar is off and he sends it well wide.

    Should have done better.

  11. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Denmark 1-1 Australia

The Australians are playing some pretty football but Tom Rogic on the edge of the Denmark box can't find the space to pull the trigger and the Europeans clear their lines.

A lovely deft flick from Eriksen sees Pione Sisto free on the corner of the penalty area, but he is guided like a cheap Sat-Nav, and he just runs into a dead end and the chance is gone.

Sahil Oberoi: VAR isn't supposed to be subjective, it's there for clear errors made by the referee. This decision was purely subjective, doesn't help when the system isn't used for what it was designed for.

Phil Bligh: I’m finding that I don’t really care if VAR gets a decision right, it’s just making football a slightly less interesting game to watch. I want to celebrate a goal or penalty decision as it happens, not after an off-pitch review.

To be fair, that's a pretty good point Sahil makes, whether the decision was right or not. It's giving us plenty of things to talk about though.

  19. 'Both sides going for it'published at 13:56 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Denmark 1-1 Australia

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Yes, Yussuf Poulsen's arm was above his head and he stopped the ball going towards the goal but I don't think it was meant. He got booked for it as well and I don't think it was worthy of a yellow.

Both teams have tried to affect this game at either end and both sides recognise the importance of the game and are trying to win it.
