For all the Argentine play they haven't had an effort on goal in the second half yet. The TV cameras have picked out some concerned looking fans...

No noticeable change in shape straight away from Argentina as Ever Banega sits pretty deep himself. Angel di Maria has offered nothing so far. This is tiki-taka for the sake of it really. Lionel Messi tries to do it all on his own and beats two men, Sergio Aguero takes it off his toes and has a shot blocked away. And another!

Jorge Sampaoli may have seen enough - he needs to change something and he does replace Lucas Biglia in midfield. On comes that talented tyro Ever Banega.

The onwatching Diego Maradona seemed to approve.

If you are an Argentina fan, you must be scared to death. Every time Iceland attack they are in danger. Not just because of Argentina's defence but Iceland are attacking well.

    Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Lovely passing move from Iceland, we've not seen much of that so far but they carve open the Argentine backline with ease. Gylfi Sigurdsson comes out wide to the left and has all manner of space to pick out Birkir Bjarnason. He stands up a cross which Alfred Finn bogason just doesn't anticipate and the ball goes dead.

Sigurdsson then wins a corner with more good feet but it's scrambled away.

Iceland have camped deep, but they don't look to worried. A little bit of movement between Aguero and Messi, it is up to those two to work together and that could be the undoing of Iceland.

    Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Lionel Messi finds the angle of pass to open up a chink in the Icelandic armour and play Sergio Aguero into space but after he plays in the right-back on the overlap it comes to nothing. Could be a patient half needed for Argentina.

There's a lot of chat on social media that Argentina need to replace either Mascherano or Biglia with a more incisive passer in midfield. Gio lo Celso?

Not everyone will agree but I've always subscribed to the school of thought that bad defending = top entertainment.

Argentina games are going to be so fascinating, because something will happen in both penalty areas, we've had all that and more in this first half.

Jorge Sampaoli will be saying "Let's keep passing and wear them down and the space will appear."

Rich: When Iceland do go forward, they have great control from long crosses.... just need to get those finishes cleaner. Great game.

James: Iceland doing well again. Argentina got a game on their hands. Still got the quality to strike at any moment. But Iceland deservingly level at half-time.

I'm not surprised by this. Iceland have got this attitude, they are not scared of anyone. They are fit, well organised side and when they get the ball forward, they make good use of it. They did this in the Euros so we shouldn't be surprised.

World Cup 2018: History as France score World Cup's first VAR goal

France coach Didier Deschamps after the early win: “The opening match is always a dangerous one and we are very happy to have won today, we are in a good position.

“It was a highly difficult match, the Australian team was very good and as far as France is concerned we were not quick enough going forward.

“At the beginning of the match it was not great, that was obvious. This is the World Cup, we must do better and we can and we will. We were not quick enough on the pitch, our offence was not as good as it should have been, but we should not say we did not know what to do. You should not exaggerate.

“I’m not going to complain about VAR today because it was in our favour obviously but the referee did not see there had been a foul and was able to correct this and correct his mistake.”

A reminder that the other two sides in this group are Croatia and Nigeria - if Iceland get a point out of this will they fancy their chances of getting out of the group?

Fantastic piece of play, brilliant from Gylfi Sigurdsson, such a classy individual. Quick feet in the box, sends it to the far post and a great save from Caballero. Every opportunity to get the ball in the box there's an opportunity for Iceland.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

The first 45 minutes of Iceland at the World Cup is undoubtedly a success. More of that please.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 45 mins

    Argentina 1-1 Iceland

Iceland! Almost into the lead after a nice variation on a theme of the long throw-in. This time it comes square to a defender who pumps a long ball into the box, Alfred Finnbogason's control is great on his chest and he finds Gylfi Sigurdsson inside the area. He is able to skip around a defender and get an early shot off which needs a big left hand from Willy Caballero.

Sigurdsson then crashes a volley wide right at the end of the half!

    Good game.
