Lionel Messi looks sharp as he nips into midfield to win the ball back and curl a shot in which is well held by Hannes Halldorsson.

  2. 'He's roofed it'published at 14:22 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    Argentina 1-0 Iceland

Aguero's first touch is sensational. Plenty of power on the shot. He kills the ball dead, drags away from defender, impossible to stop the turn and he's roofed it.

Gerd Muller used to do exactly that, that type of goal.

GOAL - Argentina 1-0 Icelandpublished at 19 mins

    Sergio Aguero

Oh yes! That's a brilliant goal from Sergio Aguero! Marcos Rojo has the ball at left-back, lashes in a cross/shot along the deck, Aguero kills it brilliantly with one touch, wriggles away from a defender and then batters a left-footed shot right into the roof of the net.

    Superb, superb striking instinct.

Spindley: Iceland getting a lot of players up, they're not sitting back and relying on a lone man up front.

Steve: Suddenly England's performance against Iceland doesn't look so bad

  5. GREAT SAVE!published at 18 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

Bang! Have a bit of that! Lionel Messi is able to skip away from his defender on ther edge of the area and wind up a rocket of a shot on his left foot, it's right at Hannes Halldorsson though and he just punches it away.

  6. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

The best thing about watching Lionel Messi is that he can receive the ball in his own half and you can still think, 'he might score here.'

He glides/ghosts between three men and then finds Sergio Aguero, who is one pass away from freeing Angel di Maria down the left. It's not quite up to scratch though and the chance has gone.

  7. 'Iceland not marking Messi'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I don't think Lionel Messi has ever been so loosely marked. No one is covering him, No one is looking around, being worried about him, being spooked by him. That may not be a great idea.

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

There goes that 'thunderclap' again as Nicolas Otamendi rather ambitiously winds up for a shot from about 45 yards out. We'll let you know when it lands.

There's an unbelievable atmosphere in here, it's awash with the blue and white of Argentina. It's a remarkable following given the 8000 plus mile trip, they must outnumber Iceland by 10 to 1. But the Icelandic fans are making themselves heard, we've had a rendition of the thunder clap, which is quite a sight.

Can Iceland repeat the humiliation of England? Seven players who played on that day start this afternoon.

There is commentary of the game on BBC Radio 5 live.

Jay: Oh dear - these are the chances Iceland need to put to bed if they are to stand any chance

Kyle: Awful defending from Argentina. That defending was as bad as England's against Germany in 2010

  11. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

A lot of promise in this opening 10 minutes. Lionel Messi now plays a one two and frees Angel di Maria down the left, and throws up his arms in digust at the former Manchester United man's poor ball in.

  12. 'Won't get too many better chances'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

We talked about Caballero, is he good enough, his pass was not good enough.

Bjarnason had to get that on target, I'm not sure how many chances they will get but not many better than that.

  13. CLOSE!published at 9 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

Got to score! Iceland should be ahead!

It's so slack at the back from Argentina as Willy Caballero is almost caught out by a pass inside his own six-yard box, he scrambles it away but Iceland work it well back into the area. It comes to Birkir Bjarnason, but he shoots wide!

What a huge chance for the Villa man...

David: This has all the makings of a hard, and probably dirty, game.

Diegwu: Argentina are a 126 times bigger than Iceland . Surely that should be enough to win?

  15. CLOSE!published at 8 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

Ooooh that's close! Lionel Messi for once rather mishits a free-kick from wide on the right, it's only about hip height but Nicolas Tagliafico reacts well to guide a deft little header which creeps across the face of goal and wide.

  16. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

Iceland aren't messing about - a series of snap challenges give away free-kicks in midfield. They don't want the men in black to have any time on the ball at all.

Lionel Messi throws a ball away, not happy with the feel of it. We had a couple of flat balls in the France game too.

Messi eventually whips in the free-kick from wide left, it nicks off a head and almost meets a free Nicolas Otamendi at the far post, but the ball dribbles wide. Half a chance.

Iceland now have a free-kick, and surprise us all by taking it quickly.

Lionel Messi drops deep to halfway to get an early touch of the ball, they are bossing the early possession. Messi has started out on the right wing in fact with Sergio Aguero pretty much up top on his own.

    Argentina 0-0 Iceland

    Pat Nevin

This is a battle of two completely different styles.

That's exactly what you want to see at a World Cup, to see who comes out on top.

It will be interesting to see how Argentina deal with Iceland's football. It is robust, it is no nonsense, and it is pretty good as well.
