I suspect a lot of Argentina fans will not know an awful lot about Iceland but I found one who does… Francisco (above, right) has been there.

He is from Buenos and Aires says: “This is my first World Cup and it’s my dream. I resigned from work in January and started to travel around Europe, so it is one dream inside another dream.

“I hitch-hiked around Spain, France and Germany and from there, a friend and I went to Iceland. It is a beautiful country and the people are so nice.”

Francisco knows a bit about the Iceland team too, and is not taking anything for granted.

“It is a small country but they play like a team with a big heart,” he explained. “It is going to be difficult. At the last World Cup, Iran for Argentina was so tough. Messi scored the only goal in the last minute.

And what about Argentina’s chances of going all the way to win the World Cup?

“We know we have Messi and Messi, if he can play like he knows and the other players support him a little, then we have a real chance. We know that.”

They must be sick of hearing about it but at 334,000 inhabitants when they qualified, Iceland are the smallest ever nation to reach the World Cup finals.

For scale that's about the size of Belfast or Leicester.

Iceland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has called this "the biggest game in the country's history" but does not have any special tricks to keep Lionel Messi quiet.

He added:"I don't have a magic formula. Everybody has tried everything against Messi and he always manages to score.

"He is one of the best players in the world. We will play against him like everything we do, we'll do it together. We'll help each other and try to do it as a team."

Which is the better player of this generation's two outstanding contenders is the sort of question that should be banned at dinner parties, along with Brexit and how much you earn.

But on it does rage - and last night's stupendous hat-trick from Mr. Portugal means that the spotlight has been turned a bit closer to Mr. Argentina.

If truth be told neither has truly grabbed the stage at the World Cup to date. But after last night maybe this is the year.

    Over to you, Lionel Messi...
