And that my chums is enough from me. Costa Rica showed some grit, Switzerland showed they have enough to cause anybody problems and they will get the chance to do some harm in the last-16 when they face Sweden.

It has been a day of drama and we are not done yet as you can follow the closing stages of our Brazil-Serbia live text by clicking here.

Alternatively, read the match report from this game here.

And I guess the big story of the day is of German capitulation, there's a cracking video of that here.

Go on my comrades, fill your boots, feast on these World Cup moments.

Thank you for your company. I hope you're loving the tournament. Now go and watch Love Island.

    Adios amigos.

Andrew: All four of the European nations that qualified for the World Cup via the playoff route have qualified for the knockout stages. With the four countries playing against eachother, at least two of them will reach the quarter-finals.

Love that Andrew. Just love it.

    • Switzerland have now progressed from the group stage in four of the last five World Cups in which they have appeared (also 1994, 2006 and 2014), only failing to do so at the 2010 tournament.
    • Blerim Dzemaili is the third player in the Switzerland squad at this World Cup to have scored in both the 2018 and 2014 editions of the tournament (also Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri).
    • Costa Rica became the last side to score a goal at this year’s World Cup, doing so with their 24th shot of the tournament.
    • Defender Stephan Lichtsteiner became the first player to reach 10 World Cup appearances for Switzerland by starting this match.

So how do you assess that? Do you criticise Switzerland for not doing enough? Or are they in fine shape. Xherdan Shaqiri came off late on, Granit Xhaka looked like he saved a bit too. Will they go into the knockout stages with that sweet blend of invincibility given they've not lost and freshness to boot?

This was the moment where Switzerland thought they had won it.

Yes, it looks like it went in off his head guys. What a weird moment.

    Switzerland 2-2 Costa Rica

I have to say that was decent stuff. A full 27 shots, 11 corners, four goals, two penalties (one ruled out), some smart goalkeeping and and bizarre own goal to end things.

A Swiss fan in the stands has his own World Cup trophy. He's believing. They'll have to be better than that but hey, you have to be in it to win it right? And they most certainly are.

  15. Switzerland go through in 2ndpublished at 20:55 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    FT: Switzerland 2-2 Costa Rica

Brazil have done their job. They finish top of Group E while Switzerland take the runners-up spot.

The five-time champions will face Group F runners-up Mexico, while Switzerland take on Sweden.

There's only two spots left for grabs in the next stage. Japan, Senegal and Colombia will play off for it tomorrow afternoon.

England and Belgium - both already through of course - will be playing for the number one spot (or second place if you're one of those who likes to plan the easier route...)

GOAL - Switzerland 2-2 Costa Ricapublished at 90+2 mins

    O.G Yann Sommer

What a bizarre end to the game. Two penalties, one later ruled out after VAR's input and now this. Bryan Ruiz fires his spot-kick off the underside of the bar, it cannons on to the back of Yann Sommer's head and goes in. I can't recall seeing one like that before.

Ultimately, Ruiz will not get the credit and that will sting on what is his last World Cup outing.

  18. PENALTYpublished at 90 mins

    Switzerland 2-1 Costa Rica

Time ticks away, Joel Campbell does brilliantly again down the left flank and he goes down in the box... penalty.

This time it will be a penalty. VAR will not save Switzerland. He raced down the flank after leaving his man and was under pressure in the box. He's pushed to the ground and it's a bit soft but here we go...

  19. Switzerland remain secondpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 2-1 Costa Rica

Switzerland are now level on points with Brazil thanks to that goal and failed penalty appeal. But they remain in second place on goal difference.

They will face Sweden in the next round, while Brazil take on Group F runners-up Mexico.

  20. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 89 mins

    Switzerland 2-1 Costa Rica

Costa Rica have a penalty as Bryan Ruiz is bundled down but I think this may well be chalked off as it looked like Ruiz was offside from a flick on.

It is indeed ruled out. Switzerland survive. They'd have kicked themselves if they had given that away from the kick-off.

    Let's all applaud VAR.
