    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Breel Embolo is played in, through the inside-right channel. He is in the area and has time to pick a cross but drives it at Keylor Navas who palms away. This game has more goals in it, it just needs someone to take their time and be more ruthless when an opening comes.

  2. The Campbell puzzle...published at 20:09 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Amazingly, Joel Campbell is still an Arsenal player. The 25-year-old played just nine times on loan at Real Betis last season. He's spent the last six seasons on the road.

One wonders what he could do if someone could just slow him down at the key moments. His application looks clear. He just needs a touch of poise.

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Will that Joel Campbell chance see us have some Costa Rica pressure like we did early in the first half. Not if Ricardo Rodríguez has anything to do with it. The Swiss left-back shoots from 35 yards and that goes over at some pace.

  4. CLOSE!published at 48 mins

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

I've been impressed with Joel Campbell tonight. He's ran selflessly up front for Costa Rica and he wins a corner for more efforts.

It's cleared but gets played back into the mixer. A dummy, it drops for Campbell, this is his moment.... slice.

What a chance from 12 yards. He waited for it to drop and took a swing, missing wildly left. Poor.

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Bryan Oviedo chops down Xherdan Shaqiri. A chance to load the box and bend a ball in there.

Shaqiri sends it in - in-swinger - headed away.

They are underway in Moscow too. Brazil 1-0 up on Serbia as I'm sure you know. Stay with me and I will keep you up to speed on that one.

  7. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Here we go then. If the first-half was anything to go by, there are at least a couple more goals to be had here...

  8. Swiss to face Sweden?published at 20:02 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

As things stand, Switzerland will play Sweden in the last-16 if they remain second in the group. If they end up top of the group in the event of a Brazil slip of some sort in Moscow, they'd play Mexico next.

As the Swiss players walk back onto the pitch, Costa Rica's players are in a huddle in the tunnel, arms locked around one another. The Swiss lads don't disturb them.

  9. Who will be feeling it?published at 20:00 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

This is a look of anguish. The kind of face you pull when a shot trickles an inch wide. Someone, somewhere will be wearing it in the next 45 minutes as Serbia, Switzerland and Brazil all fight for qualification.

There has to be drama does there not?

  10. Not so Super Mario...published at 19:55 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

One man who may well want more than simply progression in the tournament is Switzerland striker Mario Gavranovic. He's had just 11 touches and one of those was the kick-off. If he is to keep Haris Seferovic out of the team, the lone striker will probably need to do a bit more.

The Granit Xhaka debate rages. For the record, I'm not in the Xhaka personal fan club, I'm just curious as to what he does so wrong at Arsenal. Thanks for the views...

Paul: RE Xhaka, it doesn't help that he seems to get a yellow card in every game he plays! Just doesn't inspire enough confidence as a strong player regardless of his stats for club and country.

Goonerama: He is unquestionably a classy passer, there's a great midfielder in there, but he drops a clanger circa 40 yards from his own goal roughly once a game. That is fatal at the top level. I want him to be great for Arsenal, but he isn't yet.

Don't ask me why but I sense drama in the second-half. I think after this afternoon's events, we are in for a day of it.

  14. Brazil top, Switzerland secondpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    HT: Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Brazil are in a strong position against Serbia and are currently going through as group winners, meaning they will face Mexico in the next round.

Switzerland will go through as runners-up if nothing changes - setting up a tie against Sweden. If the Swiss get another goal here they would go top.

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

It started a little rocky, Yann Sommer and the woodwork kept Costa Rica at bay but Switzerland will enjoy half time thanks to Blerim Dzemaili's goal. Stats to follow...

  17. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

We go into added time as Mario Gavranovic chases a ball over the top. It needs Kendall Waston to head for a corner. In it comes... headed clear. We will have one added minute.

  18. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Costa Rica are still getting some joy. There's no doubt Switzerland have improved a little but there are green shoots for the side chasing the game.

They briefly work a three versus two situation and Joel Campbell feeds Daniel Colindres. He looks for Celso Borges but there's too much on the pass. They could and should have made more of that.

    More care needed.

  19. Xhaka continuity...published at 40 mins

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

So far Granit Xhaka has played 47 passes and completed 95% of them. It's a somewhat silent display but he's doing what he needs to nicely.

  20. Brazil reclaim top spotpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    Switzerland 1-0 Costa Rica

Switzerland were top of the group for just a few minutes. Brazil have reclaimed the top spot with that goal and it's made life a whole lot harder for Serbia...

They need a win to go through.
