Mexico aren't moving Sweden around enough, they need to get their attacking players moving fluidly to cause Sweden problems. At the moment Sweden are happy sitting in their shape.

Ally Fife: I take your Eric Church and raise you the even duller sounding John Bush (Juan Mata).

Anon: Loving the name translations. Though I must point out Russell (1534), as an ardent linguist, Enrico is Henry not Eric. And I must say, Henry Church sounds more like a kindly vicar than an Italian goal machine

This is the closest chance we have had in the other game between South Korea and Germany in Group F. That game is also 0-0.

    Follow that game here.

Germany are going through as it stands but that will all change with a Sweden goal.

Michael: Seen the Hernandez handball again, how on earth did VAR not award that, penalty all day long!

Alex: Criminal if Sweden go out with a goalless draw.

  7. Who is going through so far?published at 15:54 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    HT: Mexico 0-0 Sweden

No changes in either game so far.

Germany will finish second in the group through their head-to-head record against Sweden (won 2-1).

Mexico are top, needing just a point in this game against Sweden. South Korea are going home unless they can get a win against Germany and hope other results/permutations go their way.

This is the pressure the referee can be under at the side of the pitch.

I don't know how you can look at that and arrive at that decision. The arm was straight and pushed towards to ball by Hernandez.

  9. 'Mexico got away with one'published at 15:52 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

Before the tournament I wasn't a big lover of VAR - but it's been used perfectly there - up until when he referee sees it and can't see it's a handball by Javier Hernandez. All the players knew. Mexico really got away with one there.

  10. WATCH: Sweden denied by penalty after VAR reviewpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    HT: Mexico 0-0 Sweden

This is the big moment of the first half. Was this a penalty for handball against Javier Hernandez?

    Here are the rules...

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm.

The referee must take the following into consideration:

    • the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
    • the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
    • the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement
    • touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement
    • hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

    And here is the incident...

Despite it being 0-0 it's been quite an entertaining game. I've been pretty impressed with Sweden so far. They've looked solid and decent going forward, and they've managed to stop Mexico on the break.

A really good half of football. I enjoyed that.

Sweden started strong and then Mexico came right into it.

    Pretty even I'd say.

VAR is the talking point again though...

Ooof. The final action of the first half sees Marcus Berg smash the ball into the side netting at the end of a Swedish counter attack.

    That'll be half-time.

Mexico going through with Germany as it stands. Sweden going out.

Mexico look like a team going half at it. They won't want to lose the game and possibly go out, and they need to finish top of the group.

Mexico's diminutive forwards are difficult to track when they fizz around on the break going forward. Hernandez, Lozano and Vela in particularly are looking dangerous.

I’m reading people say that was a penalty against Hernandez. It wasn’t: no deliberate touch and arm alongside body, in no way moving toward the ball. Go and read the rules folks...

Anders: Controlled it with his arm, yet no penalty given. Disgraceful. Thought VAR was meant to stop this nonsense.

QuirkyDuckling: I think the refs are really using VAR just to get a breather.

It was certainly a close one. Phil Neville was adamant it hit Hernandez's chest. There is a buzz of excitement whenever Hirving Lozano collects the ball for Mexico but this time his shot is blocked.
