Well I was looking forward to this game Mat until you said that.

I'd happily never see Spain play again at the moment, never mind a tribute act.

I'm not having tiki-taka at all. Consign it to the bin along with the second group stage...

Japan's problem is not a lack of physicality (incl. speed/acceleration) but not using it - they're wedded to the technical, a bit like a poor man's Spain.

Scott: I'm sure Belgium will be looking to avoid the disappointing performance and result like the last time they played knock out tournament football

Ali: Fancying Japan to go through today with their intricate, efficient play!

Harriet: Belgium mean business with that squad. It’s always a pleasure to watch Hazard

    Belgium v Japan (19:00 BST)

Japan boasts one of the world’s shortest national anthems - Kimi Ga Yo (often translated as Imperial Reign). The words come from a poem over 1,000 years old. It was chosen as national anthem in the 19th century and was then set to music. Kimi Ga Yo has been criticised for its association with Japan’s Imperial ambitions and worship of the Emperor as a deity but in 1999 it was formally ratified by the government as the country’s anthem.

It is only five lines long.

Fifa chuck another £50 to Jack White as the players stride out at the Rostov Arena. Red against blue, primary colours, big names, big game...

Lukaku's low strike doubles Belgium's lead

Romelu Lukaku has scored 23 goals in 20 appearances for Belgium under manager Roberto Martinez, scoring four goals from four shots on target at this year’s World Cup.

Alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, he was the only player in the group stages to score with his right foot, left foot and head.

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Kevin de Bruyne is the assist king in the Premier League and he is a joy to watch. He is the trigger when Belgium press the ball, but once he receives the ball, his first option is to play for the jugular and get his side in at goal.

  9. 'Mertens scoring goals for fun'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

Dries Mertens has scored goals for fun in Italy. He plays on the right-hand side and he has the freedom to wander. He will deliver balls into the box and he will have efforts at goal.

No nonsense as ever from Mr. Sutton. Japan may have ridden their luck but if they can win tonight then, again, the draw is split open...

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

You can't rule Japan out, but they are lucky to be here.

Japan are experienced and play in European leagues, but I think it will be similar to the Spain against Russia game where Belgium will dictate the game. When Japan get an opportunity, they have to take it.

This is a 3am kick-off back in Japan. Falling into that nasty hinterland between staying up late and getting up (very) early.

  14. 'Japan know how to play out of trouble'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium v Japan (19:00 BST)

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

2002 was huge for Japan to be on the world stage and show everyone that they can play. From that point, they started converting tennis courts into football pitches all over the country.

The aim was to create technical football players who keep the ball on the ground, and it shows because they know how to play out of trouble. On top of that, they have the mentality to attack and go forward.

    Belgium v Japan (19:00 BST)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

This tournament has proved you cannot underestimate your opponent. The mentality has been the biggest problem for this Belgium side over the years, but they are being labelled as the 'Golden Generation' from within their own country, and they will have to deal with that.

  16. 'Belgium should be planning for the final'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium v Japan (19:00 BST)

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

Belgium are very talented and they can make it all the way through to the final, but they have to plan towards that. They should have the mindset to be preparing for 15 July.

Remember, whoever wins this will face Brazil in Kazan on Friday night.

The footage from the 2002 World Cup looks like another age now.

    Pre-HD, pre-cameraphone, pre-YouTube and pre-Facebook.

It feels like yesterday to me, definitely not making the most of exam leave.

    Great days.

Belgium and Japan’s only previous World Cup encounter was in the group stages of the 2002 tournament. They drew 2-2.
