The flags are waving, I've seen one bloke dressed as Peter the Great and soon we will hear the Russian national anthem booming around this brilliant stadium.

Can all this carry Stanislav Cherchesov's side through one more round against the odds?

Jack: Swe/Sui was a dull game to watch but great because both were very average and gave us nothing to fear. Same again tonight please Cro/Rus

  6. 'Russia's chances have tripled'published at 18:49 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Simon Gleave, head of analysis, Gracenote Sports:

"Russia performed as forecast in the group phase, finishing second behind Uruguay and qualifying for a knockout phase match which was expected to end their World Cup campaign. Instead, the host nation pulled off the shock of the round, knocking out second favourites Spain.

"Russia had never won a World Cup knockout match as an underdog before Sunday's elimination of Spain and the host nation are again underdogs in the quarter-finals against Croatia. Russia remain the outsiders, with Sweden, to win the 2018 World Cup but their chance of winning has tripled to 6% after reaching the last eight."

  9. Friends in Euro 2008published at 18:43 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Russian fans have a good relationship with the Croatians thanks to the team's help in qualifying for Euro 2008 - ahead of England.

The Russians had already crucially beaten England in the Luzhniki Stadium but then lost points in Israel.

It came down to the last day - Russia or England. Russia needed Croatia to beat England at Wembley and despite having already qualified, Croatia won.

Russia then went to the semi-finals of the tournament while England watched at home.

Russian midfielder Aleksandr Samedov: "Yes, the Croatians helped us a lot then. But that time has passed. We play against each other now at the biggest football tournament in the world.

"The loser goes home. What happened then is just history now. Now there's a new page and everybody wants to go further - both them and us."

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert in Russia

We know what to expect from the hosts - although their win over Spain on penalties was one of the results of the tournament, they basically played anti-football to get it.

That got them through but it is not what we want at this stage of a World Cup, and I think they have had their moment in the sun.

    Prediction: 0-1

  11. From Russia's camp...published at 18:39 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov: "As a coach I am trying not to watch the TV, I don't read papers, I am concentrating on my job. I believe that is the same for the players.

"I am trying not to get distracted. If I get a newspaper I will read a headline. Criticism is good but I believe we should have our eyes and ears open.

"We Russians like extremes so let's not go to these extremes. I believe it should be constructive, analytical criticism.

"You say people are euphoric: we, the people in the team, are not the people who should be euphoric."

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

The greatest goalkeeper of them all, Lev Yashin revolutionised his position and became a hero of the Soviet Union. This summer, the image of him flying high has been seen by millions of people because it is Yashin who is on the 2018 Fifa World Cup poster. He was an international star and an iconic figure, famous for his black outfit and flat cap.

Relieve the story of Yashin - a superb piece by our own Patrick Jennings.

  14. Guide to The Fisht Stadiumpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Today's game is being held at The Fisht Stadium - which is my favourite of the arenas in Russia.

    Capacity: 47,700

Background: The Fisht Stadium was built as the centrepiece venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, which helps explain its unique sloping look, designed to resemble snowy peaks.

The two ends of the venue were previously open, allowing a view of the Krasnaya Polyana mountains to the north and the Black Sea to the south. But these have been filled with temporary seating for the World Cup, in order to boost capacity to Fifa stipulations.

  16. Germany, Brazil and now Russia?published at 18:28 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

I met a huge group of supporters from Brazil last week. Rafael Da Silva and his friends have tried to bring their country's 'samba' to England and have gathered in their hundreds to watch the biggest World Cup games in Manchester.

Last week, on the day Germany were knocked out of the World Cup in the group stages following a 2-0 defeat to Serbia, this fan (middle) joined the Brazilians to celebrate their victory over Mexico.

He told them he wanted them to win because he had enjoyed their hospitality at the finals in 2014. He also enjoyed Germany thumping Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final!

Now the poor man has nobody to support. Will he be rooting for hosts Russia today?

  17. Can history repeat itself?published at 18:26 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

The last five host nations to feature in a World Cup quarter-final have all progressed to the semi-final:

    Italy in 1990France in 1998South Korea in 2002Germany in 2006Brazil in 2014

    Russia in 2018?

Mexico were the last tournament hosts to bow out at this stage, losing on penalties to West Germany in 1986.

  20. How Croatia scraped throughpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Danijel Subasic saved three penalties as Croatia knocked out Denmark in a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.

It came at the end of a largely disappointing tie - and one that had seen Luka Modric spurn a golden chance to snatch a late winner when his penalty shortly before the end of extra-time was superbly saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

The Leicester City goalkeeper also saved two penalties in the shootout but he couldn't prevent Ivan Rakitic slotting home the decisive 10th kick.

The Croatia players charged towards Rakitic - knowing they had survived an almighty scare against a Danish side that seemed to have the momentum with them moving into the shootout.
