So this game just got very interesting from an English perspective. Who would you rather face in the next round?

The neutrals in the media centre here are getting very excited about a Russia v England meeting in the semi-finals in Moscow.

It could happen - depending on whether Russia's huge wave of public support can carry them further still. Yet more shades of Euro '96.

The gut feeling and the balance on paper says it should be Croatia who triumph tonight. But we said the same thing about Spain...

  2. How Russia knocked out giants Spainpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Russia pulled off the biggest shock of the World Cup so far when they beat 2010 winners Spain in the first penalty shootout of the tournament to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 48 years.

After extra-time ended with the score locked at 1-1, goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was Russia's penalty hero, denying Koke and then Iago Aspas to spark scenes of delirious celebration at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Stanislav Cherchesov's side are the lowest ranked team in the competition at 70.

  5. 'Croatia third favourites'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

"Croatia were regarded as outsiders at the beginning of the World Cup as they were expected to finish second behind Argentina and then be thrown into a second round match against France. Topping Group D changed all that and now Croatia have a fantastic opportunity with only England ranked higher than them in the bottom half of the draw according to the Gracenote Sports World Ranking.

"Croatia's chance of winning the World Cup is now 10% and they are third favourites - behind Brazil and England - to reach the final. The second most likely World Cup final - at just under 13% chance - is a match between Brazil and Croatia."

Mark Taylor: Would much prefer Russia, but I expect the Croats to give them a hiding if they hit top gear. Modric the magician waving that wand of a right foot.

  7. Who will be Croatia's hero tonight?published at 18:10 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Croatia's Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic saved three penalties when they beat Denmark in the last 16.

They will hope tonight's hero is at the other end of the pitch - in the shape of Mario Mandzukic who scored his third World Cup goal for Croatia against Denmark.

  8. How Russia's World Cup has gonepublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 7 July 2018

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Russia began this tournament without a win in seven friendlies, prompting some concern that - despite a kind draw - they could become only the second host nation to bow out in the group stage.

However, those negative thoughts quickly dissipated in the wake of the 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia and 3-1 victory against Egypt.

They have found the going tougher in their last two games, registering just a single shot on target against both Uruguay and Spain.

In both matches they were content to allow their opponents to dominate possession, and that trend could continue against a Croatian side whose strength lies in midfield.

    Russia v Croatia (19:00 BST)

Russia have made just one change to the team which knocked out Spain as Yuri Zhirkov is ruled out with a calf problem.

Top scorer Denis Cheryshev comes back in as they revert to a 4-2-3-1 but right-back Igor Smolnikov has to settle for a place on the bench after Mario Fernandes impressed in the last 16.
