Gareth Southgate on the style of play: "We’ve played exciting attacking football, creating good chances in every game. We focused on set plays because we knew the importance of them and that’s been a positive for us.

"Our style of play has evolved enormously over a short period of time. We’re not perfect, there’s a long way to go but we’ve won matches that historically England haven’t won.

"As the players get more experienced with some more exciting young players to come through, the style of play and threat we have can evolve even more."

Kieran Trippier just gave a shout out to the team chefs. Team player.

Gareth Southgate on the third-fourth place play-off: "It’s not a game any team wants to play in. We have two days to prepare. We will want to give a performance of huge pride.

"Every time we wear the shirt we want to play well and win. It’s going to be a really difficult task. Over the next 24 hours we have to get everyone back mentally to where we want them. That’s the challenge.

"It’s too easy to move on immediately from what we’ve been through. We’ll make sure we’re ready to go again. The group have huge pride in their performances. We’ve made such strides with our supporters and public that we want to continue to do that."

Gareth Southgate: "At the moment we all feel the pain of defeat. I don’t think realistically we expected to be here. But once you’re here and played as well as we did, you want to take those opportunities in life. The dressing room is a difficult place at the moment.

"I‘m remarkably proud of the group of players – the reaction of the supporters compared to two years ago shows the country are proud of the way we played. There will in time be lots of positives to take but it’s too hard and too soon to put that in context. You have to suffer the result first sometimes. I’m hugely proud of what we’ve done. I couldn’t have asked for any more. They’ve broken through a number of barriers in the past weeks."

More from Gareth Southgate: "Harry Kane has given everything for the team. He has captained the team brilliantly throughout this tournament and I couldn't have asked more of him as a captain or as a man over the past three weeks."

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford tells ITV: "It was an experience for us and one we wanted to win. Maybe we went ahead too early, we needed that next goal to kill off the tie and we had some good chances but never put them away.

"A team like Croatia, we know their threats going forward, they have some quality players. We weathered some storms.

"We have to show pride and passion which we have. Look at the fans tonight, there was a lump in my throat watching the fans applaud us at the end. I feel that as a nation we have progressed and hopefully there is more to come in the future."

Former England defender Gary Neville on ITV: "The first thing to say is this team has taken us to a place we never imagined we could get. I said before the tournament England never overachieve. This team has overachieved getting to the semi-final and they can all be absolutely proud.

"They have taken the nation with them. You see all the fans out in the park to see them. I never thought I'd see scenes like that this World Cup. They can be absolutely proud. We did say before the game these lads have to take this opportunity because it may never come again and all I hope as I look at them now crying, disappointed, upset, is that they get another opportunity as good as the one they've just had."

More from Gareth Southgate: "It's a very difficult situation to be in. We, as a team, have made incredible progress and probaly got to a stage where at the start of the tournament we would have considered a success. But we really believed we could go another stage.

"The way we have played with composure in big matches pleases me. For a period in the second half we didn't keep the ball well, we went longer and invited pressure, we hadn't done that all tournament.

"But great credit to Croatia, they have come through three huge ties and have outstanding individual players."

Asked about the experience in the Croatia side, Southgate said: "We knew the team we brought was the most inexperienced team in the competition and the only way we're going to boost that is by playing in more tournament games. Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have played in big matches.

"I am immensely proud by the way the players have played and we can see by the reaction of the supporters, they felt the same. It was difficult to say anything that will make them feel better at his moment. They have not experienced that before playing with England and it also shows that it can be a memorable experience playing for their country."

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, England manager Gareth Southgate said: "I think they played well in the the second half and we lost a bit of control with the ball, and we started to go a bit longer. When you're ahead in a huge game, and one that many of our players hadn't played in before, nobody knows how you're going to react until you're in it.

"For that period we had to weather a bit of pressure in front of their fans and when we had the ball they turned it over cheaply. But credit to our players because I thought we regained some composure as the game went on we had as many chances as they did."
