Pam: What a wonderful team we have. They have awoken my love of football. Each one is a credit to their families.

Andy, London: I'm all Into all the self congratulation but we just lost to a team ranked 6 places below us in the FIFA rankings and I don't remember a shot on target in the 2nd half. Well done getting this far, but we yet again choked at the final hurdle. We should have won tonight.

Matt, Tamworth: Yet again fickle fans calling down our nation yet it was our best performance since 1990 - makes me ashamed of our fans

The three centre-halves did very well throughout the tournament although they fell asleep for the winner tonight. The goalkeeper was impressive and I think Jordan Henderson did well. I'm not sure about Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli because I think we need more of a creative player that can pick the ball up and drive with it.

Harry Kane scored goals but he was quiet tonight. Raheem Sterling will always be a question because he doesn't score enough goals but he causes trouble for the opposition.

David, Worcs: Well done England. A shame, but at least all of the people who aren't really interested in football no longer have to pretend that they are

Dave, London: Brave effort. You exceeded all our expectations. Not quite the result we hoped for but you made the Three Lions roar again and restored some pride to our national team. Next time!

What will hurt even more than this defeat in the morning is the nagging realisation that that was England's best chance of reaching a final in years and years and years and years. Into the future as well...

    Chris Waddle

Like everyone else, I thought a place in the quarterfinal would be great, but to go out at the semi-final is disappointing. Croatia are a good side and they are an older side with their last chance at success, so I think we have done ourselves proud.

I just hope we kick on now because we didn't after 1990. I hope we grow on it and we have to ensure it doesn't take 28 years to get to a semi-final again. We have to spend and invest in grassroots football and it will come.

Pete, Portsmouth: Henderson is not good enough he never holds on to the ball he is light years away from Modric and England need to find a Modric if they are going to continue to challenge at tournaments but credit to the team for making us proud

David: Despite hype, England are not world class - they beat the teams they should and lost to better teams. Tried hard and all credit to them

Stuart, Shropshire: And out come the critics. Sure I'm gutted but how many of these armchair critics have played in a World Cup semi final? Proud of this England team and how it has united a country. Football came home in 2018.

Kane misses two glorious chances in quick succession

England captain Harry Kane tells ITV: "It is tough, we are gutted, we worked so hard and the fans were amazing. It was a tough game, a 50-50 game, I'm sure we will look back and there is stuff we could've done better. It hurts, it hurts a lot, but we can hold our heads up high - we have gone further than a lot of people thought we would do.

"We created some good chances being 1-0 up, there are lots of ifs and buts and it is hard in these games, it is small margins and it went their way today. Until they scored we were always under the cosh. There is a lot we could have done better but they played better.

"Obviously it has been great to get to this stage and we know we have done everyone proud but we wanted to win. It hurts, it just hurts. It shows we can be up here, that we can win knockout games, can get to semi-finals and the next step is to go one step further. This is a great foundation we have built with the gaffer, we are proud of what we have achieved but we wanted more and are sad we couldn't give our fans a final."

Jerry: Total arrogance by media and pundits. Hype!!!! Where are the brave heros and Courageous lions now

Tim, London: Let's be honest, England were out of their depth and it showed. Poor performance or reached their max.... From second half onwards they looked off the pace.

Stuart, Wokingham: England totally wasted their chance. A team who can't take their chances & not for the first time this tournament, don't deserve to win. Other countries will come back stronger in future tournaments. I'm 50 next year & have said for over 20 years that I won't see England in a World Cup Final in my life time. Believe this more than ever now.

Mark, Little Plumpton: Well done lads proud moment lets push on

Mike P: As disappointing as it is to lose to an average Croatia team, this is an excellent tournament for England and the important thing now is that we get behind this young team and make sure we press on. I predict a World Cup final in 2022.

Anon: great game! our boys have done us proud and beyond anything we could have ever reasonably and realistically have expected. i wish they had won but sometimes you need to be sane and be grateful for being one of the 4 best teams in the world. thank you mr southgate (and your waistcoats) you have raised a nation!

Jason, Cardiff: England were the only team who could stop France. Its over for the Croatians too sadly
