David, Glasgow: Amazing performance from England over the last 3 weeks. The feel good factor has crossed North of the border and I don't know a single fellow Scot that wasn't supporting England...brilliant!

Sandy, Chorley: 2 years ago we lost to Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016 and now we've exited at the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup. I don't have 20/20 vision but that seems like progress to me. Onwards and upwards!

Steve: Nothing but pride for this England team. Did far better then anyone expected & the future looks bright. Just a shame that on Saturday we now have to play in the most pointless match in football.

    England lose the semi-final

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

I'm gutted but I've got really positive thoughts for the team moving forward. It hurts to see them lose but the better team won tonight, the most experienced and intelligent team won. Their good players made the right decisions at the right time. It was always going to happen that they would have a period of control and they saw it out.

Dared to dream but no complaints with the result. Croatia the better side - Modric outstanding.

I feel like I felt in 1990. I thought we were in control and the first Croatia goal caught me by surprise. Overall, we have to see this as a stepping stone. It's a big disappointment but don't forget that this is a team in the making. Gareth has laid foundations here that will pay off in the future. What we don't have is a midfield player who can split opposing defences.

  6. 'We needed a second goal'published at 22:20 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    England lose the semi-final

England boss Gareth Southgate to ITV: "First half we were really good and we had chances. We lost our way a bit after their goal. Possibly at that moment we were hanging on a bit rather than trying to control the game.

"We got the control back in extra time and showed composure. Knockout football is fine margins.

"When you have spells in a game against a quality side you have to make them count. We needed a second goal.

"I think we were looking at how we might stem the tide but there weren't clear changes we could make to change it. We just needed to show more composure. We stopped playing for a period of 20 minutes in the second half."

Lex: Proud but embarrassed at the same time. Should have won it but wasted chances, doubt we'll ever get a better chance but they're young and very promising.

James from Suffolk: Don’t see this as the end, see it as the beginning of something special. England United.

Richard Metcalfe: As a optimist England have no doubt progressed this World Cup reaching a World Cup semi final. As a pessimist we still only beat Colombia and Sweden. We could have easily gone out on penalties in round 16!

England boss Gareth Southgate to ITV Sport: "By the end several players were out on their feet and we were down to 10. The reaction from the fans at the end shows you everything they’ve given.

"We’ve come an incredibly long way in a short space of time. The whole thing is beyond where we thought we might go. Tonight we weren’t quite there. But the team will be stronger for it.

"As we reflect, there will be positives but it’s difficult tonight. We were so close to what was unimaginable at the start.

"We’ve left everything out there. We’ll look at the goals and chances but I don’t think we could have given more over these six or seven weeks."

Duncan, Bracknell: Put it in perspective. We never expected a semi final. Germany, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Brazil...We did better than all of them. Well done Boys. You did us proud. Come on England.!!

Ahmed: The England National team brought the whole nation together. It was the first tournament we actually enjoyed. We got lucky in the teams we played but Modric and Rakitic were a step too far.

Dave: Can't believe the negativity. Four weeks ago we were no hopers. Tonight we were headed clearance away from a World Cup final. An inspirational team, who played with bravery and character and who will have learned so much. They will like us all, they will be gutted. But like us all they should be proud

For the negative punters out there: Croatia a class act, a settled and cultured world class team. Sweden whilst pragmatic, have pedigree, they know how to win. Colombia were a dark horse that would never win World Cup, difficult tie = success for England.

    Alex, London

England is my adopted country and my first memories of a World Cup are from Italia 90. Watching us for the last many years it's been so refreshing to see a side do better in an England shirt than they normally would in a club shirt. We have an identity, a young team and a talented coach. The future's bright.

England captain Harry Kane speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It's been an amazing run but it hurts to lose, it really hurts. We wanted to go on and win it and we thought we had enough to go through but it wasn't to be.

"In big games, small margins make the difference and they had a ball that fell their way at the end and he stuck it away. We played well at the start and in extra time but we missed a few chances to kill them off.

"There are a lot of positives to take from this tournament. It's a big stepping stone from two years ago."

Mark: Best team won. Dele Alli did not perform and has been a liability all tournament. England have been a man down in every match.

Ben: The players will learn from this and we should be very excited as this is a young team who have not peaked yet and will be hopefully stronger for the Euros in 2 years.

Richard, Tunbridge Wells: C'mon, it's fine margins. We could have won, they did win. Let's take the positives. We're on the up. Roll on two years! And well played boys!!
