I wonder whether Gareth Southgate did consider playing Eric Dier in there and leaving one of Jesse Lingard or Dele Alli out?

We lose or win the game in midfield, with how the Croatian quartet plays. It puts a lot on Jordan Henderson. I think we can get at them defensively but I think that Croatia midfield is the key to the game.

Watched 1966 final in a yha hostel in Buckingham gate London. On a b/w TV 12in. It's coming home again. Becoming a habit - every 52 years regular as clockwork!

Aaron: One too many games for Croatia tonight. Denmark and Russia don't have the quality or the energy of this England squad and Croatia faded very badly in those games.
Ange: Whatever happens tonight the team have done us proud, win or lose...but please don’t let it be a repeat of Italia 90
Darragh: Harry Maguire to score the winner tonight with a header from his own half when defending a Croatian corner

Completed it mate.

As poor as Sterling has been at times, I agree with Southgate starting him because Rashford is far better coming off the bench than Sterling is

Aidy Boothroyd is on the pitch with Gareth Southgate. That's an ex-Northampton player and manager out there with England.

Alan Shearer
Former England captain on BBC Radio 5 live
There was talk ahead of the tournament of it being between Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier to play that role for England, so it shows how well Jordan has done because he wasn't guaranteed to get into the starting XI. Put his range of passing, his energy and his leadership skills together, and he has done very well.

Same again for England, no changes to the side that beat Sweden in the quarter-finals.
That means manager Gareth Southgate keeps his trust in Raheem Sterling, who starts up top.
Whether captain Harry Kane plays alongside him or is deployed in a deeper role remains to be seen.
England XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier, Young, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Sterling, Kane.

This is the game where England fans have really come to the party. Already a much greater presence inside and outside this vast Luzhniki Stadium.
They sense Gareth Southgate's side are on the brink of history and want to be here to share in this landmark moment in the sport, England's biggest game since they were beaten beaten by West Germany at this stage in Italia '90.

Mark Jones, Anthony Jackson and Alan Berry are over here from Essex, and are also preparing to stay on if England win. Or should that be 'when'…
"What do you mean, how confident are we?" asks Alan, in answer to my question. “We’re going to do it – we’re coming home with the trophy.”
What’s different this time, then?
“We’ve got Southgate, and he is a king isn’t he,” Anthony adds. “What he has done is got the young kids in, built a team and managed it.
“He has built morale too, because the feel-good factor is back, and he has got us here. It is not going to end tonight, either.”

It will be a very tough game tonight. They have the best midfielder around in Luka Modric. What could work in our favour is they looked dead on their feet in the last game and they could have one or two knocks.

For all the talk of England making history, imagine if Croatia won it. A nation of barely 4m people that fought a war for its very existence just 25 years ago, displacing much of the population, winning the most fiercely and globally contested prize in team sport, would surely be one of the greatest sporting stories ever told. I'd love it to happen, and it just so happens that England are in the way of it.
