  5. 'Croatia the kings of chaos'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 15 July 2018

    France v Croatia (16:00 BST)

    Adrian Chiles
    BBC Radio 5 live presenter

I was asked the other day if Croatia had an inferiority or superiority complex. The answer is both.

They'll tell you all day long they're the greatest people, from the greatest country ever, with the best athletes anywhere, the bluest sea, the best olive oil, cheese, ham, wine etc etc etc.

And just as you're getting a bit bored of hearing that, they'll go into a diatribe about how the country is corrupt, going to pot, doomed to failure and chaos, how everyone wants to leave but can't and blah blah blah.

Can they do it? I think they can. They're a special team with a couple of really special players who are on an absolute roll.

France are arguably stronger on paper, but their opponents will - typically for Croatia - embrace the status of underdog while at the same time feeling quite sure they'll win.

The French are favourites, but football is chaos. And when it comes to chaos, the Croatians are in their element.

Ivan Perisic used to help out on the family chicken farm as a boy. He left hometown club Hadjuk Split as a 17- year-old to join Sochaux but never played for them. It later emerged his father had persuaded Perisic to move because he was on the verge of bankruptcy and needed the signing-on fee.

He has since had spells at Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg. He complained about a lack of chances at Dortmund; then-boss Jurgen Klopp responded “public whining belongs to kindergarten, not to the world of adults”.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Croatia's midfield is very good and Paul Pogba will have to be disciplined today. Kylian Mbappe is the player that excites me and he is like a high speed train that is not stopping for anyone. The number 9, Olivier Giroud, hasn't scored yet, but it just shows how strong they are in every other area.

  20. 'Deschamps deserves so much credit'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 15 July 2018

    France v Croatia (16:00 BST)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

Dider Deschamps is one game away from becoming only the third man in history to win the World Cup as a player and a head coach after Brazil's Mario Zagallo (1958, 1962 and 1970) and West Germany's Franz Beckenbauer (1974 and 1990). Deschamps was the captain in 1998 and 20 years later he could lift the trophy once more.

It would be his win, first and foremost. "He deserves so much credit," said Lloris. "He put a plan in place and he created a team. Nothing is bigger than France. Everyone makes the efforts and plays for the team and for each other. He also brings his calmness, his serenity, his experience."

Deschamps was angry with the French media at the beginning of the tournament. He thought they were too critical of him despite three very underwhelming performances in the group stage.

He tried to tweak things before the start of the competition and in the first game against Australia. He quickly came back to his old winning formula: a balanced tactical formation, a strong defence - and his legendary luck.

He even admitted himself: "Am I often at the right place at the right time? Yes certainly." With his conservatism and his caution, Deschamps has made this team in his image.
