Former Sunderland goalkeeper coach Adrian Tucker, who worked with Jordan Pickford for two-and-a-half years, could not contain his excitement at the Everton goalkeeper's heroics, even as a proud Welshman.

He told Radio 5 Live: “It was quite nerve wracking for myself to be fair, because obviously I wanted Jordan to do so well.

“Obviously when he made that save at the end… I had been saying to my wife ‘he will make one save, he will make one save’, and obviously it was an important one!

“Jordan knows how to wind people up a little bit on occasions and he knows how to get into people’s minds. And he certainly tried to play to his advantage and to England’s advantage last night in that particular tense time."

That's the word amongst the Swedish media after yesterday's win over Switzerland, which has Swedes remembering the summer of 1994, when they reached the World Cup semi-finals in the USA.

Newspapers have praised the collective effort of the Sweden team, who have found a way to succeed without relying on the individual brilliance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Aftonbladet, external conceded that the match was seen by some as “real horror”, but its reporter said he preferred the calm and methodical to drama.

“Only seven opponents left”, he said., external “The world may think that this is a boring bunch, that there are others who offer matches that are more open. Sure. If the world does want to stop Sweden, you’d have better send more accomplished opponents next time.”

  17. England's chancespublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

Alex, Cambs: Yes, Sweden will be tough to break down in open play, but that's not what we do. Our only two goals from open play have been a Jesse Lingard worldie and a world-class flick from Harry Kane. Gareth Southgate will have some set-pieces up his sleeve. It's coming home.

Nigel: I'm trying to stay positive but surely I can't be the only one who thought that, without the penalty in normal time, we wouldn't have scored?

Wayne Ellis: Funny how for the last 5 years, people have been saying the 4-4-2 formation is outdated and had no place in international football. Now it’s Sweden’s biggest strength?
