Chris Underwood: How many people are pulling a sickie with a hangover today then?

England first lost a World Cup penalty shootout in 1990, when Terry Butcher was part of their defence, and the Three Lions also went out of the Euro 96 semi-finals on penalties.

Butcher tells BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast: "I did feel cleansed. It was a lot of baggage dropping off me at that time, a wonderful feeling.

"You think what could have been in 1990 or 1996, so it was wonderful to see this young side progress. They played well, and lost their way in extra time in an undulating, rollercoaster of a match. You couldn’t sleep. You had to have a couple of pints just to get to sleep!"

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former England defender Terry Butcher believes the manner of England's win, against a Colombia side who collected six bookings, provided an extra level of satisfaction.

He tells BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast: "For some reason they had a gameplan to niggle England. When they decided to play football they are a good team. England weathered the storm. They are a little naive.

"A lot of these payers are in their first World Cup. It took them some time to get to grips with it but they did.

"It gave me one of the most satisfying feelings I have ever had, following England, supporting England. It was a good job you didn't hear my comments during the game because I was just a fan."

Amrul Choudhury: Colombia were absolutely disgraceful last night. It would have been a real travesty if they went through.

Steve Urry: As brilliant as it was to win and well played all the lads. I hope that referee and the idiots in the VAR box are packing their bags.

David Whale: Well done England but I don't think anyone can deny it was a flat and boring 120 minutes from them. Colombia were maybe too aggressive, some call it passion but they seemed hungrier. Sweden will be England's first big test. Maybe boring will win this World Cup though.

Elmir Badalov: Colombia didn't deserve to play the extra time, they must announce the American referee as a national hero. If it wasn't for him, they would have got humiliated on the pitch, with two red cards & two more penalties. Fifa needs to use common sense when choosing the referees.
