England's players and their manager have an opportunity to achieve sporting immortality on Wednesday as they aim to reach the 2018 World Cup final.

This is the level of prize and prestige on offer in Moscow for a team given little hope of progressing past the quarter-finals before the tournament began.

Alexander Cox: EURO 2004... England vs Croatia. Scholes had not scored for 3 years and gets the first in a 4-2 win... Come on Sterling!

Steve Greenwood: Here in Perth on the other side of the world and ready to go to the casino for 2am kick off. It’s the only place open at 2-4am

Gareth: Woke up feeling nervous this morning and the nerves are getting worse with every hour that passes by - come on England, we can do this.

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Raheem Sterling misses chances but he gets to the right spots.

I've watched him and I think just that little bit of luck from a ball that comes in and doesn't get touched, he could have scored.

The Croats should be scared of pace, and Sterling has pace to burn. You just feel the tide is going to turn for him and he could be the difference.

Everyone's talking about the football. Even Nico Rosberg, whois spending his Wednesday at Wimbledon.

The former Formula 1 champion was philosophical in talking about his own country's display at the World Cup and then gave his semi-final prediction...

"The mood was bad in Germany, but they didn't deserve to remain in there. They wouldn't have won the tournament anyway.

"We're hoping for an England v France final - that would be really exciting. Hopefully, that will happen on the day of a Nadal v Federer final, 10 years after 'that classic'.

"My prediction for later? England will beat Croatia 2-1."

Harry Maguire's emergence as an integral part of the England team has been one of the stories of this World Cup, but I am not surprised it has happened for him here in Russia.

Gary A: This is what football can do. At the start of the World Cup the wife said she couldn't bear a month of misery whilst I watched "11 prima donnas kicking a bag of wind around". This morning she said "I can't wait for the game tonight it'll be brilliant!" I'm certain as I can be that she's actually not being sarcastic so Come on England from both of us!

Michael Owen did it and there was Pele and now Mbappe has set the tone at this World Cup.
