Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

We all think Jordan Pickford will be England's number one at the World Cup but he hasn't really had a chance to show what he can do today.

But the game has gone a bit scrappy in the last five or 10 minutes and Nigeria are just starting to come into the game.

  3. CLOSE!published at 17:46 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

Superb play from England, cutting open Nigeria at the back.

Sharp movement shown by Dele Alli, playing the ball to Tottenham team-mate Kieran Trippier.

The full-back sends in a low cross towards the front post which is flicked towards goal by Jesse Lingard, but Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho is able to keep the ball out.

Gareth Southgate has stayed in his seat for the duration of the first-half. That is usually a sign he is enjoying what he is seeing. Although having said that, he has just sent out three of his subs to warm up.

    England 1-0 Nigeria

For real work for England to do at the back.

Gary Cahill fails to clear and ex-Watford striker Odion Ighalo pounces on the ball.

He shifts it to his right, but then a low strike is well blocked by John Stones.

Ash: If it’s not a right foot tap in Sterling cannot finish. Not from distance and not with his left foot

Mike: If only footballers had two feet nowadays. Sterling should have scored but couldn't kick the ball. Shame

Phil: Gary Cahill, not a ball playing centre-back but does know how to defend and pops up with the odd goal or two

    Austria v Germany (kick-off delayed)

Ahead of the expected inspection schedule, referee Pavel Kralovec has just appeared in Klagenfurt, rolling a ball around on the sodden pitch to see how well it travels.

Every roll is greeted with a huge roar from the crowd, hopeful that this game will go ahead. Then he disappears back down the tunnel. Fans huddle under their umbrellas.

The players mill about in the dry. And we wait for further news.

  9. 'Nigeria playing at 30%'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

The Nigerian coach, Gernot Rohr, will be very disappointed in what he has seen so far. Nigeria are playing at 30-40% and it's all England.

  10. CLOSE!published at 17:37 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

Raheem Sterling involved once more, holding the ball up before laying it off for the marauding Ashley Young.

The Manchester United full-back cannot get his feet sorted out quickly enough and although he manages to dig a shot out, a Nigeria defender slides across to block the ball.

England playing some very good football, we don't say that too often.

  11. Nigeria yet to get goingpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

    Gary Flintoff
    BBC Radio 5 at Wembley

The Nigerians may look the part in their snazzy new kit for the World Cup, but they have been distinctly average so far. They have not given their sizeable following anything to shout about so far.

  12. Postpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

Raheem Sterling was under immense pressure at Euro 2016 and did not produce his best, but is looking in fine fettle so far today.

The Manchester City man is finding pockets of space in between the Nigeria defence and midfield, playing a couple of give-and-gos.

    Nice.

  13. Postpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

First job of the day for England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is to claim a high cross into the air from Nigeria full-back Abdullahi Shehu.

    Easily dealt with.

England exerting total domination here. Quicker, sharper than Nigeria and a real threat at set pieces. No wonder manager Gareth Southgate is allowing himself a smile as he sits on the England bench - but must now really cash in while they are so superior.

Anon: If that was Smalling he would've headed it straight into the ground and wide, eyes closed

John: The reason Wembley is nowhere near full is because there are literally thousands of people still queuing to get in mostly Nigeria fans - kick off should have been delayed?

Craig:Cahill scored it but Harry Kane is claiming it.

    Slow hand clap.

  16. CLOSE!published at 17:31 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

    Lovely stuff from England.

Great link-up play between Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling.

The Tottenham slips in the Manchester City player with a cute ball down the edges, Sterling is through on goal but his dinked effort drifts a yard wide of the post.

Gotta be taking those chances, can't be missing them in a World Cup quarter-final.

  18. CLOSE!published at 17:29 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England 1-0 Nigeria

England well on top and are causing Nigeria plenty of problems.

Raheem Sterling has a shock blocked by Leon Balogun, before John Stones is unable to get enough contact from close range and Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho can gather at the second attempt.

  19. 'The keeper had no chance'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

Gary Cahill's marker is caught ball watching and he loses the Chelsea defender. It's a great header by Cahill. He just focuses on the ball and the keeper has no chance.
