Good start by England. Nigeria are looking for a bit of a slower tempo and if England keep this up they will dominate the match. Nigeria have hardly broken a sweat and it's all England at the moment.

Two Nigeria players hit the deck with a thud.

A lack of communication between Joel Obi and new Brighton man Leon Balogun sees the latter get clattered on the chin.

A nasty clash and the physio sprints on.

Don't think Balogun knows what day it is, he's seeing stars at the moment.

Dave: I’m not excited by this line up. Is Cahill a starter? Can see Henderson playing the first game in Russia. Not terribly excited but we will see.....

Ryan: Looking forward to seeing how this team works, not far off my own selection. 5 at the back should give Dele & Lingard the freedom to push on and support

    England 0-0 Nigeria

    Chris Waddle

I think the England team selection is very attack minded. It's a chance for Gareth (Southgate) to have a look at his system. We know he is going to play three at the back but it depends on what he plays ahead of that.

Nigeria will be up for it but their results have been mixed. They beat Argentina but then lost to Serbia so they're inconsistent.

Gareth Southgate said "all would become apparent over the next 5 days" regarding his number 1 goalkeeper.

An opportunity now for Jordan Pickford ahead of Jack Butland.

Gareth Southgate didn't want to take any risks with Harry Maguire who has missed a couple of days training this week.

It's an attacking side but this is unlikely to be the one that starts v Tunisia.

Not in the side, as expected, but the Liverpool pair Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander Arnold are here after an extended break from their Champions League campaign.

England manager Gareth Southgate tells ITV: "Jordan Pickford is number one today, when you are in control of the shirt and that is important and a good opportunity for him today.

"Maybe 10 days ago there were doubts about selecting Raheem Sterling. My initial instinct was what was right for the first team. He has been under fire this week and I had to protect him.

"He is strong, desperate to play football and his attitude and approach to training has been excellent. I am looking forward to watching him play today."

Gabe‏: I had an FC Baikal Irkutsk scarf specially imported from the far east of Russia, by contacting their ultras, getting one of them to go to the club shop and buy it for me, and then send it to me by air mail. Cost about £40. Worth it.

  18. Don't read too much into it...published at 17:03 British Summer Time 2 June 2018

    England v Nigeria (17:15 BST)

    John Murray
    BBC football correspondent

Gareth Southgate told us not to read too much into his starting line up today, with regard to what it might be for their opening group match in Russia against Tunisia.

But there must be every chance that the goalkeeper who starts today will be England’s number one for the World Cup. My gut feeling is it will be Pickford but Butland has many supporters.

Southgate says he still wants to see different combinations among his outfield players here. But it’s the choice of goalkeeper that will probably be most revealing about the likely World Cup England team.
