    Australia 0-1 Peru

Despair for Australia. They really should score after working the ball in behind the Peru defence but centre-back Anderson Santamaría slides in brilliantly to deny Mathew Leckie a tap-in.

"Tim Cahill would have scored that," says a colleague behind me...

The TV pictures are showing various Peru fans crying in the stands following their goal. That's what a World Cup goal means.

  6. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    Australia 0-1 Peru

That's as close as Australia have come. Tom Rogic tries to trick his way through a sea of red shirts and eventually finds enough space for a shot. He makes decent contact but the effort is straight at Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

  7. CLOSE!published at 26 mins

    Australia 0-1 Peru

    That's a chance!

Peru are awarded a free-kick 30 yards from goal and the delivery finds their skipper Paolo Guerrero unmarked. He tries to flick on the cross towards the back post but doesn't get enough on it and the ball drops safely into the arms of Mat Ryan in the Australia goal.

A better connection and that could have been in!

Tom: Australia being punished for their complete lack of quality in the final third. Too often they don't spot the man in space. When they do the final ball is poor.

    Australia 0-1 Peru

That goal was Peru's first at a World Cup since Guillermo La Rosa's strike on the 22 June 1982 in a 5-1 defeat to Poland.

Their fans celebrated like it too.

That goal for Peru makes life a lot harder for Australia. They need to beat Peru, hope Denmark lose and also better the Danes' goal difference.

As it stands, Denmark are currently drawing 0-0 with France and will therefore qualify in second place, two points below France, who top the group.

    Andre Carrillo

    Pick that out!

The Peruvian fans are sent into delirium as their team scores their first goal at this World Cup and it's a stunner.

Australia don't deal with a ball over the top to Paolo Guerrero who races into the penalty box. The Peru captain then gets his head up and chips the ball over to Andre Carrillo on the right side of the box and the winger smashes a volley back across goal into the far corner.

    Australia 0-0 Peru

Aaron Mooy and Mile Jedinak are certainly a combative duo at the base of the Australia midfield. They are winning the ball back well but it remains to be seen if the Australian front four have enough quality to break down the Peru defence.

Peru only kept two cleans sheets in 18 qualifiers though so that will give them hope.

    Australia 0-0 Peru

It's all Australia in attack. Peru's Luis Advíncula gets in well to break up an attack and screams at his fellow defenders for more support.

The bad news for the Socceroos is that yellow card for Jedinak means they are now level on points with Denmark in the fair play standings. That could be important in the unlikely event we get there.

    Mile Jedinak

    Ouch.

I think this is completely accidental but it looks awful.

Peru's Christian Cueva nips in to control a high ball with his head and I don't think Aussie captain Mile Jedinak saw him coming. He lifts a boot to try and control the ball but ends up catching his opponent in the shoulder with his studs.

Jedinak is rightly shown a yellow card.

Australia are starting to build a bit of forward momentum. They put a couple of dangerous balls into the penalty area but they come to nothing.

    Australia 0-0 Peru

Both have these teams have looked good in parts in this World Cup but lack a clinical front man. Peru have had 27 shots without scoring while Australia's only goals have come from the penalty spot.

Paolo Guerrero is leading the line for Peru today and striker Tomi Juric has been brought into the Socceroos' starting XI.

The first shot comes from midfielder Jedinak though and is high and wide.

    Australia 0-0 Peru

A quiet start from Peru as they pass the ball around the halfway line but then Australia steal the ball and charge down the left flank through Robbie Kruse.

The pockets of yellow in the crowd roar him forward but the attack eventually comes to nothing.

Passion. Passion absolutely everywhere. On the pitch, in the dug-out and in the stands.

The Peru players are close to tears as they belt out their national anthem for what will be the final time in this World Cup.

The sound coming from the stands is deafening. None of Peru's fans have gone home. They're sticking here until the end.
