When we watched this game back to get it ready to show to you, we found there were a number of occasions when racist chanting appeared to be directed towards Paul Parker. We have edited the sound so this unacceptable abuse is now not audible but did not want to hide that it happened so we wanted to let you know.

Parker gets free after a great ball by Chris Waddle, but he can't find a ball inside for Gary Lineker!

Already a brighter start from Germany, with David Platt having to be smart and play a backpass to Peter Shilton under pressure.

Dan Smith: Pickford in for Shilton, Trippier in for Parker and Kane in for Beardsley otherwise the rest of the 1990 team. Coincidentally each of the 3 changes are wearing the same squad numbers as their 1990 counterpart

  7. 'I'm really pleased'published at 12:54 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Bobby Charlton
England World Cup winner in 1966

I'm really pleased, England have played well, have knocked the ball about and looked confident. We wanted to show the rest of the world we can play football and that was first class.

Olaf Thon and Klaus Augenthaler looked like they could cause problems through the middle of the pitch but defensively England have been solid. But there is a still a lot of work to do.

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

People have been writing in saying that instead of having a penalty shootout, the team who commit the fewest number of fouls in the match should go through.

I'm not sure about that. Penalties are not fair, but they do provide great drama and excitement.

    We hear you Colin...

What's really frightening for me is that this game was 'only' 24 years since we won in '66, whereas Wednesday's game is 28 years on from this one!!!! I'm only 46 but that stat makes me feel about 80!

The Germans are favourites and are feeling the tension. It's a pleasure to see an England team play like that - two wins in a row have given England the confidence to play. We look a classy, stylish, international side. Germany don't know how to deal with us.

  14. 'Walker outstanding'published at 12:46 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Terry Venables
    Tottenham manager on BBC One

Paul Gascoigne has been doing very well, but for me Des Walker has been the outstanding player so far. He looks unbeatable and Germany's strikers can't get by him. England have bossed this game and now we look favourites, I cannot wait for this second half.

  15. 'All the knockers been proven wrong'published at 12:46 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand

All the knockers and the doubters have been proven wrong, we have played really nice and tight in that first half. Against Cameroon we had a certain amount of luck but against Belgium I thought it was good defensive play.

Throughout the tournament England have played well and deserved the little bit of luck they have had. And in this match we have had no luck yet otherwise we would have scored a goal.
