Ben Cairns: It really was a terrific England performance - any criticism Paul Parker gets for the free kick should be totally cancelled out by the brilliant ball he played for Lineker's goal. My only regret is that I wasn't around to experience this

'You'll Never Walk Alone' now being sung by the England fans. You don't get that too often these days.

  8. 'It fell nicely for me'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-1 England

    Gary Lineker
    Ex-England striker

We didn't give up. We kept going as we had done throughout the competition. It just fell nicely for me. It fell on my left foot - the old swinger - and it hit the back of the net. It was a great feeling.

    West Germany 1-1 England

That was Gary Lineker's fourth goal at Italia 90, and his 10th in two World Cups. A target for Harry Kane to chase down.

  10. 'No more than we deserve'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-1 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

It's no more than we deserve! I imagine there will be some crockery needing to be replaced back home. The Germans got themselves in a mess and Lineker picked his spot with that left foot.

  11. 'What a great moment!'published at 13:32 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-1 England

    John Motson
BBC commentator at Stadio delle Alpi

The Germans got themselves into a terrible tangle and how they were made to pay - Lineker picked his spot with a beautiful left-footer. Well we did say it wasn't over and what a great moment for England and their supporters everywhere.

GOAL - West Germany 1-1 Englandpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Gary Lineker

    Get in there!

He's barely had a touch all game, but Paul Parker lofts a ball into the area, two German defenders don't deal with it and Gary Lineker plants home left-footed.

    England go again!

Mark Wright does indeed get something from a corner, he wins a header well but it's easily gathered in by Bodo Illgner.

England need to find something or it's semi-final defeat...

  14. 'Still something in this game'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-0 England

    Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand

We didn't have much luck on the free kick for Germany's goal but if the lads keep playing, and there is still plenty of time, we could get something from a free-kick or a corner. There is still something in this game for us.

Black boots on every player, static advertising boards, Pearce thundering in and a ref in charge.....the beautiful game.

Since Trevor Steven came on he's playing wide right in midfield, with Chris Waddle on the left. A good old-fashioned 4-4-2.

Not long to go now for England in their first World Cup semi-final since 1966, and the last before this week.

    Can they find a leveller?

It's such a shame, a waste, that this would be Paul Gascoigne's SOLE World Cup isn't it?

  19. Postpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-0 England

    John Motson
BBC commentator at Stadio delle Alpi

With about 17 minutes left Germany are looking likely winners to make it through to the World Cup final but England have still got an awful lot of optimism and intent, there is no way the spirit of this side will be broken.

Dominic: where was VAR in Italia 90? that foul on Waddle would have been overturned. Just need a Lineker goal now
