West Germany ending the half with their best little spell. Paul Parker should be booked for a late challenge and then Peter Shilton has to be up to push away a long-ranger from Klaus Augenthaler!

Peter Shilton into action for the first real time, down to his left to pouch an effort from Olaf Thon.

And now Rudi Voller does finally come off, Karl-Heinz Riedle on in his place. We never saw the best of him in England, really, for Liverpool and Fulham.

    Bryan Robson
Injured England captain on World Cup Grandstand

The lads have been doing great, they have started really well and have done exactly what we said they should at the start, which is to get tight. The Germans are the ones who have been slack so far and we have to be delighted at the moment.

Rudi Voller has just pulled up on the far side, he was sprinting down the line past his marker Des Walker and went down after kicking the ball out of play. If it's a kick he will be OK after a bit of treatment but if it's a pull he may be in trouble.

Peter Beardsley, in many ways the Raheem Sterling of his day, does brilliantly to run from deep, a jinking run and cross, David Platt nods it on and it's only just ahead of the waiting Gary Lineker...

My memory was always that we were the better side in the semifinals , the first 15-20 minutes proving my recollection is that hazy! Remember as well ...... 'you'll never beat Des Walker'! Cmon England.

England looking good in Turin. The ambitious and open midfield trio of David Platt, Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne are bossing the show.

Chris Lawson: Gazza for Alli, Pearce for Young. Otherwise the 2018 team.....though Lineker vs Kane is a tough call!

Garry Laidler: Just Gazza! We are yet to produce another like him 28 years later. He is what’s been missing recently. #FogOnTheTyne, external

West Germany have been made to look very average in this opening spell. It's interesting, given the talk about Gareth Southgate's England having 'an easy run' and having not played well yet, to think about how mant World Cup winning teams have been excellent through a whole tournament.

Italy in 2006 were pretty workmanlike. Spain in 2010 lost their opening game and didn't score many goals. Germany were decent last time out to be fair...

Which members of the 1990 squad would you put in today's England side?

Tony D: If they were physically trained up to today's levels Gazza and Lineker would make the grade for sure.

Mark Lister: All of em. It was a great squad

England have had their hiccups in matches before today but this is undoubtedly the best start they have made - and that is against West Germany, who have looked invincible so far in this tournament.

England have coped well with what little pressure Germany have had and only Thomas Hassler looks really settled.

It will be interesting to compare the tempo of the game on Wednesday to this one. Football has moved on a lot in terms of fitness and athleticism.England started this game really well as Paul Parker heads over after good work from Gary Lineker.
