Chris Waddle jinks past the last defender and goes down - penalty ref?!

No. Not even an appeal. Where's VAR?

  3. Postpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Almost brilliant! Paul Gascoigne carries the ball once again and plays a lovely through-ball, Chris Waddle is breaking in and he's a matter of inches away from collecting. Almost class.

Matthew Horton: If Paul Parker had just stood where Peter Beardsley told him, that might not've happened

Dean Faccini: Have always maintained that England's best performance at Italia 90 was the semi-final match against West Germany, and this (excellent) 'World Cup Rewind' from @BBCMOTD, external has reminded me just how confident England played against the formidable West Germany #WorldCup, external

  8. CLOSE!published at 13:14 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

That's a good response! Paul Gascoigne puts a fine cross in, Stuart Pearce gets to the near post and flicks it inches wide!

  9. Postpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Bobby Robson looks forlorn on the bench. Can England shake this one up?

  10. 'Rendered helpless'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-0 England

    Peter Shilton
    Former England goalkeeper

I was happy with the wall and the way I had everything lined up but they then tapped it square which changed the angle. I changed my position to narrow the angle, I was three or four yards off my line which I was happy with. I was confident I had it covered. Paul Parker went out to close the ball down and it hits him and loops up quite viciously. I just couldn't get it, it clipped the bar and goes in.

As a keeper it's the worst scenario you can find yourself in, you're rendered helpless. You've just got to hope the ball goes over really, and I actually thought it was going to hit the crossbar. It was in the one place I couldn't get it and after playing pretty well throughout the game I thought that was going to decide the match.

  11. 'This is a test'published at 13:11 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 1-0 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

It's so disappointing to concede a goal like that. People have been saying that we have had all of the luck during the tournament but that was so unlucky. This is a test of character now.

  12. goal

GOAL - West Germany 1-0 Englandpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Andreas Brehme

It really was a good position!

How unlucky can you be? The free-kick is rolled to Andreas Brehme, he hits a shot which loops up off Paul Parker and over Peter Shilton...

The last semi-final involving England vs Croatia was Tim Henman vs Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon in 2001. The Croatian won on that occasion. Time for revenge on Wednesday!

  15. 'Make some noise!'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

    Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder at Stadio delle Alpi

For the first time the German fans are beginning to make a bit of noise as their team enjoys a period of pressure, Lothar Matthaus has been creeping forward and the German defenders have been taking turns in coming forward on the attack to test the England defence because in that first half they always had numbers back.

Chris Morgan: One disappointing thing is the empty seats at a WC semi. Perhaps we can get more large corporations involved to take up tickets, which will fill the stadium and also lower the prices for the genuine fans?

  18. Postpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

England bring everyone back as Paul Gascoigne smashes a corner clear. Germany now controlling possession ,England on the back foot.

  19. Postpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Chance! Olaf Thon gets into the England box and has a shot well saved by Peter Shilton, made himself big. At the other end Gazza is almost breaking through but he goes down under a pretty heavy challenge.

  20. Postpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    West Germany 0-0 England

Better from West Germany, but England then build from the back, 2018 style, as Mark Wright brings it out and has a shot deflected away. Harry Maguire = Mark Wright.

The England fans are making plenty of noise now.
