    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

He's had a quiet game so far, but I've just realised that Sunderland's Bali Mumba should be receiving his GCSE results this summer.

If he's progressed through the school system as quickly as he did the football pyramid, he probably did half of them early anyway.

Paddy P: Charlton fan here, and given our off-season turmoil coupled with the takeover talk, I literally cannot believe we're looking this good.

Neither can I, Paddy. Especially after this morning's news of Jake Forster-Caskey's injury...

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

You have to hand it to this Charlton team, who have exhibited organised defending as well as bruising attacking play.

Six shots on target for the Addicks - and none for Sunderland. You can't say the Black Cats have created anywhere near enough.

Who'd have thought this before kick-off, when Lee Bowyer couldn't even name a full bench?

Smiler: My sneaky suspicion is Rotherham will do better than expected. Swansea could implode. Can't see Steve McClaren doing anything (at QPR) but being fired by Christmas. Great English players have rarely been great managers - so it will be interesting to see if Frank Lampard will buck the trend.

Adam Hayward: Man you all got Ipswich so wrong. Every season they are predicted to be bottom half or relegation and every season they finish top half. This season will be a good one for ITFC. New manager and a little bit of money spent will see them finish third. You'll see... you'll all see!!!

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 25 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

Sunderland's Donald Love succumbs to his earlier injury and makes way for Bryan Oviedo, fresh from his World Cup campaign with Costa Rica.

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

Many had Sunderland as odds-on title favourites from the moment their relegation from the Championship was sealed, but credit to Charlton, who have started with a flair and energy none of us could have predicted given the noises from the club in pre-season.

And right on cue, Darren Pratley lets rip from a considerable distance and forces Jon McLaughlin into a catlike save to parry the shot wide.

No one closing the Charlton man down...

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

Lynden Gooch's inviting cross swings to the back post from deep, but no one is there to meet it!

Definitely the hosts' best chance of the game so far...

But Donald Love is down - it looks like he's twisted his ankle.

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

Mark Marshall is everywhere for the visitors, zipping all over the shop like a Whack-A-Mole game.

It looks like there could be trouble for a Charlton side already hit by injuries, as Lynden Gooch careers into Lewis Page with a needless challenge.

But he's back on the pitch as things get under way again.

    Sunderland 0-1 Charlton

Lynden Gooch drives at Lewis Page, and the Charlton man drags him down to give away a preventable cross.

It's a free-kick on the right edge of the Addicks box.

Sunderland send it low across the box to pick out George Honeyman, but it's like all their play in this game so far - slow, ponderous and easily cleared.

Mr Thompson: Lots of fans fancying Aston Villa to finish top two this year in #bbcefl predictions. I agree. Very few teams bounce straight back, only Newcastle in last two seasons. Looks a weaker league but will still be competitive. Looking forward to it and fancy us.

Villa have to wait until Monday to start their Championship campaign - follow live text commentary of their match at Hull from 19:30 BST.

Karlan Grant's mazy run undoes the Sunderland backline, and a flurry of yellow shirts race into the box to meet the cross.

It hangs in the air tantalizingly, but no one can quite get there.

Sunderland are looking sloppy, to be honest, as Charlton's creative players wreak havoc.

Mat VP: New season, new owners, new players, new league - same old Sunderland at home.

Still plenty of time to go! But Charlton have made an excellent start and deservedly lead.

A word for Lyle Taylor's celebration, too, as he ran over to the bench and held up team-mate Jake Forster-Caskey's shirt.

We learned this morning that midfielder Forster-Caskey has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament - the injury all footballers fear.

He sustained the injury in training on Thursday, but his depleted team are making a real go of things in his absence.

Lyle Taylor slots home from the spot!

And there comes that all-too-familiar sinking feeling for Sunderland, as Taylor fires home with ease to the top right.

Charlton have definitely looked the better side so far, with Sunderland yet to really find a foothold.

  15. PENALTY TO CHARLTONpublished at 8 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Charlton

Karlan Grant's delicious touch carves the pitch right open as he slips into the box - before he's scythed down by Chris Maguire.

It's a risky tackle from the Sunderland debutant and you can't argue with the ref's call...

    Sunderland 0-0 Charlton

Mark Marshall's floated ball goes to the near post - but there's pushing in the box. Jon McLaughlin to take Sunderland's free-kick...

  17. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Charlton

Another Charlton free-kick, this time as 20-year-old George Lapsie is left horizontal on the edge of the Sunderland box. It's in a better position than the first one, and Karlan Grant looks at it eagerly.

But it deflects off the wall as he tries to loop it over - and it's out for a Charlton corner.

    Sunderland 0-0 Charlton

Sunderland reply immediately as Charlton's Chris Solly redirects a cross out for a corner, but Dillon Phillips thumps it away as Charlton canter up the pitch.

Two chances to deliver two early blows - but neither side could take them.

  19. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Charlton

A couple of tasty challenges flying in as Sunderland start on the back foot, and George Honeyman hauls down the tricky Mark Marshall on the edge of the box for an early Charlton free-kick.

Lyle Taylor - who Sunderland pursued extensively during the summer before he chose the London club - limbers up... and skies it into the stands behind the goal.

Should have hit the target from that distance.

    Sunderland v Charlton

    And we're off!

Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson might have been the talk of Wearside over the summer - but with the World Cup done and dusted, it's over to Jack Ross and co. today as Sunderland search for an instant return to the second tier.

But it's a difficult division to get out of, as Charlton can attest - who name only five substitutes today.

It's hard to believe this is a League One game, to be honest. I mean, not even 15 months have passed since Sunderland were last playing in the Premier League.
