    Cheers, Adam.

While I'm reeling from the discovery that Sunderland midfielder Bali Mumba is only 16 - he was born exactly a month after Michael Owen's 2001 hat-trick against Germany - let's have a re-cap of the teams before kick-off...

Sunderland and the words "relegated" and "crisis" have gone hand-in-hand in recent years.

Back-to-back relegations have seen the Black Cats drop drop to the third tier of English football for the first time in 31 years.

There's a new owner and also a new manager, Jack Ross, who should have a decent chance of success - a final year of Premier League parachute money, a massive following and a new squad can surely only galvanise the Black Cats and see them bounce straight out of the third tier?

They are firm favourites to win the League One title and begin their season at home to Charlton Athletic this afternoon. The two sides last met in the top flight in 2007 when the Addicks were 2-0 winners, but they have never faced one another in the third tier on English football before.

If you want to feel old, Sunderland midfielder Bali Mumba makes his first Sunderland start today - aged just 16.

That's right - he was born after the turn of the millennium. He's not even old enough to drive. In fact, he wasn't even born when Michael Owen scored his hat-trick for England against Germany during World Cup qualifying in 2001. Sob.

To make us all feel even worse, this isn't even his Sunderland debut. He came on as a substitute in the final game of last season, when Sunderland beat champions Wolves 3-0.

I don't know what I was doing at 16, but it wasn't making my first EFL start.

There’s an expectant buzz around the Stadium of Light this afternoon as Sunderland begin life in the third tier for the first time since 1988.

New seats have given the ground a facelift, there’s a new manager at the helm in Jack Ross and a broom has been aggressively swept through the squad with a host of new faces.

Fans have responded with their wallets and purses, about 32,000 tickets have been sold, hoping to see the new era start with a bang. Charlton are the side being sent into the lion’s den but with ex-Newcastle player Lee Bowyer at the helm, there’s plenty of incentives to spoil the party.

It certainly doesn’t feel like a third-tier event, and, as befits a match that has graced the Premier League, the TV cameras are here, perhaps looking for that rude awakening that could face the Black Cats this term.
