Brentford head coach Dean Smith praised his side’s attitude and application in their 5-1 demolition of Championship new boys Rotherham.

"From the outside, everyone expected us to win before the game," he began. "But I expected us to work hard, put pressure on them and perform well, because if you do that, you get results."

“We created the most chances in the league last year but didn’t convert as many as we should have, so it was good to see the front three all get on the scoresheet today.

“I was disappointed with the goal we conceded at the end. There was a little too much tippy-tappy stuff around the back at 5-0. You don’t get many opportunities to go and push the goal difference up like that and the way I want us to play is to always look to get on the front foot when we have the ball.

“There is a lot of potential in this squad and the application and attitude throughout pre-season has been outstanding from a group of very young lads.”

And now Swansea have a shot at goal. Tom Carroll has a go from 25 yards and it flies just over the bar.

    Better.

  3. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Swansea

Another chance for the Blades but John Lundstram fires wide from the edge of the box under little pressure. He should have done better.

    That's better from Sheffield United.

Swansea give the ball away inside their own half and David McGoldrick pounces, advances to the edge of the box but then puts his low shot wide.

New Ipswich boss Paul Hurst was happy with the nature of his side's comeback after coming from behind to draw on the opening day of the season. Despite initially taking the lead, Ipswich were left feeling content with a point against newly-promoted Blackburn Rovers.

"I'm pleased in the end because of the scoreline and scoring late. It's something my teams have been good at. Whether that's fitness or that characters you have playing for you, I hope that's something that can become a trademark of ours," Hurst told BBC Suffolk.

"I expect us to be better in time. I expect better fitness levels and to be better on the ball and I also expect to bring some players in to add strength to the squad."

Joey Barton was considered after his first League One match as Fleetwood boss ended in defeat thanks to Joe Pigott’s 60th-minute goal for AFC Wimbledon.

The 35-year-old said: "Obviously I would have wanted it to have ended in a victory, but the lads gave us everything in terms of effort and endeavour.

“They could have played better but you have to give credit to Wimbledon - they manfully and stoically defended their goal at times.

“Sometimes you need a little bit of luck in football and a bit of a helping hand, and on another day we certainly could have had that.

“We have a starting point to work from now and it’s important that we review, reflect. learn the lessons and move forward to Oxford now."

    Sheffield United 0-0 Swansea

I'd love to be telling you all about a flurry of chances at the start of the second half but it's been fairly quiet, truth be told.

You know those lacklustre games that get settled by a horrible defensive error or a 35-yard worldie? This seems like it could be one of those.

    FT: Millwall 2-2 Middlesbrough

Neil Harris took the positives from his side's 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, despite ruing how the Lions surrendered a two-goal cushion in a frantic closing 10 minutes.

"We played Boro off the park," he told BBC Radio London. "We should have been 5-0 up. If you want to be a top side and you want to achieve, you have to do it for 90 or 96 minutes.

"That was as good a performance as I've seen as Millwall manager. That was as good as any performance from last season. We're playing against a top, top Boro side and we've absolutely cruised it for 87 minutes."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder will want more from his team in the second period.

They got into good positions during the first half but their final ball was lacking too often.

    FT: Wigan 3-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay pulled no punches after his side's opening day defeat by newly-promoted Wigan.

"Honestly, over the 90 minutes, Wigan have the three points - I think there is no discussion," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"We had today no control in defending. Wigan could have had not just those three goals, but the four or the five. We must work hard with each other to do it better.

"We didn't block crosses, we stayed too far away, we always left one or two players free in the middle - we only looked to the ball, but not to the opponent.

"It was, for me, also a surprise that we had no stability in the defending. We've had so much progression in the last two and half months from last season, and today we gave so many chances away that we were lucky at the end that it was 3-2.

"We can do it a lot better and we must do it in the next game."

  12. Still to come this week...published at 18:27 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

Stoke City travel to Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds on Sunday (16:30 BST), while Aston Villa open up against Hull on Monday (19:45 BST).

Sheffield United are among the second-tier teams in action on Tuesday - they face Middlesbrough, while Nottingham Forest take on West Bromwich Albion (19:45 BST).

  13. Mowbray left dreaming of three pointspublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

FT: Ipswich Town 2-2 Blackburn Rovers

A 91st-minute equaliser from Tayo Edun snatched victory away from Tony Mowbray's Blackburn Rovers at Ipswich. Having come from behind, Rovers looked set to secure an away win in their first game back in the second tier.

"I didn't feel as if we were going to concede, so it's a huge disappointment to be honest," Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I think there's a positive in there somewhere, if you look at being disappointed with a draw away from home on the first day of the season."

"The nature of their equaliser wasn't something they really worked for, which is a bit disappointing."

Nigel Clough's Burton Albion tasted defeat in their first game back in League One since 2015-16.

"Very, very pleased with the performance," he told BBC Radio Derby. "But extremely disappointed by the result.

"The first 15-20 minutes cost us the game, but from that point on, I was delighted with the way that we played, and we've created enough chances probably to win three games there today."

  18. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Swansea

We've only had one attempt on target in the first 41 minutes at Bramall Lane and it was Martin Olsson's tame free-kick for Graham Potter's Swansea.

This is his first game as a manager in England, but he's not short of experience, having spent several years in charge of Swedish club Ostersunds.

    Sheffield United 0-0 Swansea

There are claims for a Sheffield United penalty here but Swansea are absolutely convinced that Chris Basham dived in the box.

He certainly went down easily and there's nothing given by the referee.

  20. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Swansea

We're going to have a stoppage in play here. Swansea centre-back Federico Fernandez was too brave for his own good, trying to head a ball clear and getting it kicked into his face at close range by Enda Stevens.

No intent at all from the Sheffield United man.
