Newly-promoted Macclesfield have fallen to defeat in their first game in League Two, losing 3-2 at Swindon, who scored twice in stoppage time to secure victory.

MK Dons have begun their search for a return to League One with a 2-1 win over fellow newly-relegated side Oldham.

Exeter shook off any hangover from losing in the play-off final last season to begin their campaign with a 3-1 win over Carlisle.

On any other day, perhaps Forest Green would have had the biggest League Two scoreline of the afternoon with their 4-1 win over Grimsby...

... but that honour goes to Crewe, who fired six past a Morecambe side who failed to find the net.

  5. League One headlinespublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

It's been a difficult day for the League One newcomers: Accrington Stanley's first ever game in League One ended in defeat, as they lost 2-0 at home to Gillingham. Coventry lost 2-1 at home to Scunthorpe and Luton fell to a 1-0 away defeat against Portsmouth, with Wycombe managing a creditable point against Blackpool.

The youngest boss in the EFL, 32-year-old Michael Collins, watched his Bradford side win 1-0 against last season's beaten play-off finalists Shrewsbury.

Joey Barton couldn't emulate the success of Frank Lampard and will have to wait for the first win of his managerial career, his Fleetwood side losing 1-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Newly-relegated Barnsley got off to the best possible start as they search for an instant return to the second tier, winning 4-0 at home to Oxford.

    Millwall 2-2 Middlesbrough

Dramatic end to proceedings at The Den.

Millwall will rue not killing that game off after a hatful of chances but Boro kept on going and found two goals late on.

    George Friend (90+7 mins)

It's an absolute smash and grab from Middlesbrough at Millwall in the seventh minute of stoppage time!

George Friend is the scorer in a proverbial goalmouth scramble and I don't think he knew much about it after Lewis Wing fired in a ball to the danger area.

    Tayo Edun (90+1 mins)

    Equaliser for Ipswich at last!

Fulham loanee Tayo Edun has it in the first minute of stoppage time. It's a searching effort at best from the midfielder and he turns from 30 yards out and fires speculatively across goal.

It flies through a sea of Blackburn bodies and then in off the left post past David Raya.

    Wigan 3-2 Sheffield Wednesday

A second yellow card for Atdhe Nuhiu sees Sheffield Wednesday down to 10 men as they search for a leveller.

Barnsley extend their lead against Oxford to 3-0, with Brad Potts firing home from 20 yards.

Southend might end up finding an equaliser as they narrow the deficit to 3-2 at home to Doncaster, Theo Robinson coming up with the goods.

My word! This could be the story of the day...

Loanee Yanic Wildschut has the goal for the visitors after David Wheater's assist.

    Ipswich 1-2 Blackburn

Gwion Edwards got things off to a perfect start for Ipswich and he nearly found the equaliser they've been searching for with s stunning bit of skill and run down the right.

Flicked it over Derrick Williams and then drove towards goal, but his shot was deflected behind for a corner.

    Last three minutes.
