Spurs just need to sign someone who has experience winning things, I’m getting fed up with everyone who says that youth is fine when there are obvious gaps in our squad.

  2. 'Sarri arrival is good for English football'published at 14:35 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

Chelsea v Man City (15:00 BST)

Man City manager Pep Guardiola: "We have to adapt. We knew it would be what it is, every manager wants to have their players but it is what it is. It's our first game and we will see what our level is, but we always want to play games against big teams to see our position, our style and our mentality.

On Benjamin Mendy's return from injury: "Last season, he only played several games in the beginning. It's good for him to start playing again and get confident and be involved in the way we play."

On Maurizio Sarri's arrival at Chelsea: "It's good for English football that Sarri is here. He is an excellent trainer and viewing his teams I enjoy a lot of what he does and I like the way he plays. I am a fan and I like the teams and managers that play in that way - so I like it because i am a spectator as well.

"I try to have a good relationship with my colleagues and I have a good relationship with him."

  3. Who is Maurizio Sarri?published at 14:33 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

Chelsea v Man City (15:00 BST)

    James Horncastle
    European football writer

Maurizio Sarri never made it as a player. He was a rugged, non-league centre-back mentored by the great Kurt Hamrin, the Swede who used to regale his players with stories about playing against Brazil great Pele in the 1958 World Cup final and all those goals he scored for Fiorentina.

Unable to make a living as a footballer, Sarri worked as a foreign currency trader at the Banca Toscana. He coached part-time, hopping from one Tuscan town to another.

One reason Sarri lay undiscovered is because he had to wait years to get on the famous Supercorso at Italy's elite coaching school. He didn't have the contacts, nor the pedigree of being an ex-player to be put at the front of the queue.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has included 17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi in his side to face the champions, while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has opted to start with teenager Phil Foden.

There is also room in the Chelsea team for new signing Jorginho in midfield. City's club record signing Riyad Mahrez takes his place behind lone striker Sergio Aguero.

Despite a poor run of form, Alvaro Morata is given the nod to lead the line for Chelsea as Ross Barkley is selected in a midfield three alongside Cesc Fabregas.

  6. 'Jorginho is not Maradona'published at 14:28 British Summer Time 5 August 2018

Chelsea v Man City (15:00 BST)

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri: "I think the World Cup is a problem for every team, especially the important teams and me too in this moment because I arrive here and I still have never seen at the moment six of my players."

On new signing Jorginho: "First of all, Jorginho is not Maradona. He is a good player, a technical player, who is quick with his mind. He will be very useful for the team - especially in this first period."

On having dinner with Man City boss Pep Guardiola: "He told me that the Premier League is very hard for coaches because it is a very competitive championship, but he also told me that to be a coach here is very exciting."

It is so hot at Wembley today that many fans (and myself) have got quite a sweat on just from walking down Wembley Way - aka Olympic Way, or the "Avenue of Champions" as it seems to be being rebranded.

You can see from the amount of cranes on the skyline that there is some serious construction work going on around these parts, and the famous old route to the national stadium (for now) is no exception.

A plethora of signs inform fans that it will be soon become a "promenade with entertainment, cafes and restaurants... with integrated speakers and interactive banners to kick start your Wembley Park experience from the moment you step on to it".

Hmmmm... unless that experience includes the aroma of some decidedly dodgy burgers, then I won't be happy.

One tradition has not changed yet though, because there are still dozens of touts around. If you want a ticket for today, and you haven't got one yet, it will set you back around £120.
