If you were picking the fixtures for United in the first nine or 10 games, you're not playing City, United, Chelsea. I wonder with Jose's words the other day - 'Let's wait until November' - I'd be very surprised if United weren't top of the league come the end of November.

The teams are in - and there are a few surprises.

Andreas Pereira starts for Manchester United along with new boy Fred. Paul Pogba is captain but Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial are on the bench.

Leicester have Jamie Vardy on the bench but Harry Maguire plays. James Maddison makes his debut.

    Full teams to come.

  5. 'I would expect Jose is making the footballing decisions'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 10 August 2018

Man Utd v Leicester (20:00 BST)

    David Moyes
Former West Ham & Man Utd manager

I would expect the football decisions to be down to Jose Mourinho because of his experience and what he has won. But within football, I think there has been a big change with owners and chief executives wanting to make decisions, and I think that is detrimental to the game.

Everyone thinks the manager gives the chief executive a list of four or five players, but I think it is changing now because it's so fast and fluid, and things change all of the time.

Man Utd v Leicester (20:00 BST)

    David Moyes
Former West Ham & Man Utd manager

The main signing Man United have made this summer is Fred, and the rest are backup. I think they wanted to bring in one or two centre-halves, but it hasn't been easy for any club to strengthen at centre-back.

It wasn't that long ago they brought in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, so maybe the players already at the club will be given an opportunity to show what they can do.

There is plenty of merchandise with Jose Mourinho's face on it on sale outside Old Trafford tonight, and he doesn't look particularly happy on any of it.

I don't think Ed Woodward and Jose Mourinho are on the same page in terms of the profile of players they want to bring in. Mourinho wants experienced players to bring success quickly, but I think the club are looking more towards younger players which they can develop.

United just seem to be an unhappy camp and it all comes down to the manager. I wonder what the owners make of him telling fans not to turn up to their tour games in the United States, plus his criticism of his players and all his comments about needing new players but not getting them - he has basically been telling the centre-halves already at the club that they are hopeless.

It has resulted in a negative feeling about the club, at a time when almost every other club in the land has an air of positivity going into the new season. I think Mourinho's frustration probably comes from him looking at City and Liverpool, and the way they play, and he is probably jealous. You wonder about the impact it will have on United at the start of the season, and what it means for his own future too.

    David Moyes
Former Man Utd manager on BBC Radio 5 live

All of the managers will have their preparation done now and they will be keen to get into it.

From a distance, it looks like all of the clubs have done good business. Wolves, Fulham and West Ham are among those clubs that have all signed a lot of players, and they will be looking for improvements.

I expect Manchester United to win the game tonight.

If anything sums up what seems to be a divergence of opinion over the short-term strategy at Manchester United, it is the treatment of Anthony Martial.

In the United States, less than 20 days ago, it became apparent Jose Mourinho was willing to let Martial leave.

The decision was based around the comments of Martial's agent, Philippe Lamboley, who in a TV interview in June said that "after considering all the factors and possibilities" his client wanted out.

In truth, the position suited Mourinho, who concluded a long time ago that Martial, who has a maximum two years left on his contract, goes missing at big moments.

Evidently, that view is not shared by others at Old Trafford.

    Will he play today?

The Premier League is the only one of the top five European leagues to not have video assistant referees this season - with La Liga and Ligue 1 following on from the Bundesliga and Serie A this summer.

All Carabao Cup and FA Cup games at Premier League grounds will use VAR this season, however.

Premier League clubs voted in April not to use the technology in the top flight this season, instead agreeing to continue testing it during 2018-19.

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore, who is set to leave his post by the end of this year, says it is "inevitable" that VAR will eventually be introduced in the top flight.

United have got so much quality in their squad and they definitely progressed under Jose Mourinho last season. What they are missing at the moment is harmony, but if he can find that and get all his good players smiling and happy, they will be very close.

  15. Why didn't United sign a defender?published at 18:42 British Summer Time 10 August 2018

    Mina equalises in injury time

In short, they couldn't do the right deal.

The confidence Jose Mourinho expressed about United getting an additional signing on 31 July during the club's pre-season tour of the United States was based around multiple targets.

They ranged from Leicester's Harry Maguire to Barcelona's Yerry Mina (above, who subsequently joined Everton), via seasoned internationals Jerome Boateng and - briefly - Diego Godin.

United have the money to do big deals. They were prepared to do exactly that to get a top player. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would not have flinched had he been told £100m, a sum that would have smashed both United's club record transfer fee and the world record for a defender, was the price to be paid for for the right man.

I am sad to report that you cannot buy a Lee Grant t-shirt outside Old Trafford, or a Diogo Dalot flag... but any Manchester United fans desperate to mark their club's summer transfer activity with a souvenir can spend some of their hard-earned coins to buy a Fred scarf and welcome the Brazilian to the club.

  18. 'Dangerous to write United off'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 10 August 2018

Like any big club, Manchester United need some silverware - in his first season at Old Trafford, 2016-17, Jose Mourinho won two trophies - the League Cup and Europa League - but he won nothing last season.

So, the pressure is on and there is even speculation he might not last much longer in his job.

But despite his current downbeat demeanour, it would be dangerous to write United or Mourinho off.

We have only seen him when he has appeared in front of the TV cameras this summer and heard what he has told the media, and I suspect he will behave very differently on the training ground with his players.

I am still expecting them to be very strong this season, and I actually think that, along with Liverpool, they will be a lot closer to Manchester City this time.

Man Utd v Leicester (20:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

The atmosphere at Old Trafford will be interesting because Manchester United have not had the greatest pre-season.

But does that matter if you win your first game? I would suggest not, and I do think United will start with a victory.

Leicester lost five of their last seven games last season and the first few weeks of this campaign are going to be crucial for their manager Claude Puel because, if they start poorly, he will be under pressure again.

    Prediction: 1-0
