Martial had found a route back in to the team and a chance to impress earlier than expected after what happened in preseason.

He's a lucky boy, it is up to him what he wants to do with it.

This is what Anthony Martial can bring, pace and trickery.

He gets the ball on the left and then is on his bike, beating new Brighton signing Martin Montoya all too easily, but his low shot from the edge of the box is blocked by Solly March.

    Brighton 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United skipper Paul Pogba on the ball for the first time, galloping down the left channel.

He lays the ball off to fellow Frenchman Anthony Martial, whose cross is too long and sails out of play.

"Tony Martial came from France, English press said he had no chance..." sing the travelling United supporters.

A big opportunity today for the Frenchman.

Early pressure from Brighton at a boisterous Amex Stadium.

United defender Eric Bailly is called into action, having to step across and clear a Solly March cross.

He had to get the clearance right or it could have ended up in the back of his own net.

Brighton's 1-0 win over United in May came through the cohesive spirit and buoyant optimism that characterised their season. Conversely, Jose Mourinho's post-match criticism of his players typified the disgruntled, divisive mood that seems to have festered on.

But that victory is Brighton's only success in 11 league and cup games. They were disturbingly poor at Watford.

The Seagulls took four matches to land their first Premier League win last term and with Liverpool to come, it might take them as long again this time round. New signings need to hit the ground running.

Mourinho's body language camouflaged a patchy win over Leicester and raised questions about his long-term future. But results change everything. I can see United making it two opening wins from two for the fourth season running.

Right, here come the players. Rather gloomy on the south coast, spots of rain in the air.

PJ: Really hope Anthony Martial takes this opportunity and makes a clear statement to Mourinho cause he's a fantastic player with the potential to be great and deserves more playing time!

    Man City 6-1 Huddersfield

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "(I'm pleased) with the three points, the way we played. We started better than last season. We made a good performance in 90 minutes.

"Last season Huddersfield played five at the back. We decided today, we would play with two strikers. All the players made a good performance. We could not attack in this way last year because we did not have Benjamin Mendy, he is so clever to go up and down. When we have we are able to attack in that way.

"The pass was outstanding, the control by Sergio Aguero. I never saw him like this since I was here, he is in an incredible condition with the ball and without the ball.

"I thought to take Sergio off before the hat-trick but in the end it was perfect, he scored a goal and off to a standing ovation."

  12. 'I’m happy for the players'published at 15:44 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Burnley 1-3 Watford

    Watford

Watford boss Javi Gracia speaking to BBC Sport:

"Today we scored three and we have done better than last season, but I don’t like to look back at last season, I prefer to enjoy the moment. We did a good job and I’m happy for the players.

"It is important the amount of goals but the quality as well. Today the strikers Troy Deeney and Andre Gray scored which is very important for them and the team. Will Hughes scored an outstanding goal, I am happy for all of them.

"All the players are working a lot, Troy for example has a brilliant attitude every training session, this we will try to keep that in the next games

"I think we started well, scoring early but after that we suffered a corner kick and it is difficult to defend Tarkowski. In the second half we took a step forward, created more chances.

"You always expect the best, but in this moment I prefer to focus on the next game, the best mentality to do our best."

Manchester United did enough to beat Leicester in their opener, but they will improve as their star players get closer to full fitness.

Although the Seagulls beat United on their last trip to the south coast in May, I am backing Jose Mourinho's side to pick up the points this time.
