Liz Tray: It is going to be a long season if we don't take the chances we create. Jesus not good enough. Mahrez poor. Fernandinho looking his age. Get it together!

Andy: Need to improve their possession to Chelsea standards to get a result in this game

    Man City 1-1 Newcastle

    Paul Lake
Former Manchester City defender on Radio Manchester

There are a lot of improvements for City to make after the first half but I am sure the players will be fired up after Pep's half time conversation.

Newcastle will defend doggedly in this half.

City have not been sluggish in moving the ball but they will need to be quicker.

  4. KICK-OFFpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Man City 1-1 Newcastle

Instantly some pace in the Manchester City passing. One-touch stuff sets up a crossing chance. Looks like they may show a bit more energy...

'Right Here Right Now' blasts out again for a minute. Fatboy Slim is loved here it seems. A few seconds of that tune and now we switch it up to 'Blue Moon'. Enough of this ear bashing, let's get on with it...

The players are back in the tunnel and Manchester City walk out as one. Pep Guardiola is on the bench and he is not looking too chipper.

Alexander Larter: For all the doom and gloom, lack of talk about how well the players are carrying out Rafa's tactics and showing discipline. Also Dubravka is a steal at 4m. Quality keeper.

Ebony Maw: Seems like teams will have joy in exploiting the space Mendy leaves when he is attacking. Newcastle don’t have personnel for it but other teams can.

Back to the current situation at Manchester City and if you're not able to watch, this average position graphic tells you how things have unfolded.

City on the left, have on average had nine players in the Newcastle half. The away side in contrast have been deep and organised.

Perhaps one interesting point is how Riyad Mahrez - number 26 on the left - has not been as high up the pitch as you may expect.

  12. Half-time fill...published at 18:22 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

The half-time period in the evening kick-off can be 15 minutes where you search for a football fill. You've had the beautiful game everywhere you've looked since midday today after all. So, with that in mind, take a look at the BBC Radio 5 live Twitter feed for some snippets of 606. Here's Robbie Savage questioning Crystal Palace...

    Man City 1-1 Newcastle

For all the possession, little really in the way of big, big chances for the home side. They can improve for sure and I have no doubt Pep Guardiola will be telling them as much.

One thing that may be overlooked. Given Newcastle have been so defensively disciplined, how on earth did DeAndre Yedlin end up in the area to level? Good legs by the young man indeed.

  15. 6/10 performance from Man Citypublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Man City 1-1 Newcastle

    Paul Lake
Former Manchester City defender on Radio Manchester

City in those key areas have been able to get David Silva and Aguero on the ball at times, but overall if you were to mark City out of 10 so far it is a six.

They have not got into the rhythm we thought they would after the first eight minutes. Newcastle have grown into the game and it will be a real test of City's resolve to get back in front.

Leroy Sane is in the stands next to Kevin De Bruyne. There were reports today that Sane's attitude has frustrated Pep Guardiola. They could do with some of his cut and thrust now.

Speaking of cut and thrust, Kyle Walker uses his pace down the right side to reach the dead-ball line. Low cross... held.

Newcastle will be desperate to take this into the break after giving so much. They sit in, John Stones has it on halfway, Raheem Sterling, David Silva, wide to Riyad Mahrez who plays an in-swinging cross... flicked by Sergio Aguero... easy for the keeper.

Uday: This Newcastle team has spirit. No matter how much they get criticised bey continue to fight back.

Mark: I'm a Newcastle fan living in Manchester. Never seen my team beat City in the league. Half the office at work are City fans too. It's a good thing I'm away all next week!

Felix: For all those attacking Rafa, just look at our team. All our players bar two, Kenedy and Dubravka, have been relegated from the Premier League. And we got a goal at the Etihad!

  20. 'City need more from Mahrez'published at 18:13 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Man City 1-1 Newcastle

    Paul Lake
Former Manchester City defender on Radio Manchester

One-on-one Riyad Mahrez has got great feet, a great step over, but he has not committed Dummett or Clark as of yet.

Pep Guardiola and City will be wanting more from him, he has left a lot to be desired.
