Newcastle have tried to press and impose themselves but the speed and movement of Man City's play means it is impossible for them to get a foothold in the game so far.

Rafa Benitez stands on the side of the pitch, he's still managing and to be fair, you've got to have a bit of bottle to stand out there when things are not going well. The touchline can be a lonely place.

Speaking of lonely, I don't think Ederson has touched it yet. Manchester City continue to play in the away half. In truth, they are not creating bucket loads to kudos to the Toon and that back five.

Since the start of last season, only Mohamed Salah (45) and Harry Kane (35) have had a hand in more Premier League goals than Raheem Sterling (31 - 20 goals, 11 assists).

What do you do now if you'e Newcastle? Stick another man up top or just stay in the game as best you can. It's not going their way as they concede a needless corner with DeAndre Yedlin letting the ball go dead even though it had come off him last.

It's cleared but Man City have it back on halfway, faced by the black and white shirts.

Great bit of play from City all round. A wonderful finish by Raheem Sterling and a great start for City.

A goal nice and early is what Guardiola would have wanted, the game will settle. Maybe Newcastle will venture further forward which will open some more gaps.

    Raheem Sterling

A superb finish but my oh my a bit of a gift.

Newcastle's 5-4-1 formation was settling in and had broken up an attack but Jamaal Lascelles plays a loose pass in his own final third. It is seized upon and Raheem Sterling picked things up instantly to cut in from the left and fire home with his right peg.

Rafa Benitez looks disgusted and who can blame him. That's the game plan pretty much torn up. Super finish by Sterling.

Daryl Peel: I really hope that the TOON can get some sort of result here but I doubt it 10 years ago before City was bought it was a level playing field not now

Peter Shields: It frustrates me the lack of game time Phil Foden is given - I was really hoping he would start today - foreign managers are the ruination of really talented young English players - if you're unprepared to play him, then send him out on loan ( to Newcastle PLEASE)

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle's shape is briefly fractured and Riyad Mahrez is released. He has space to run into and attacks the central defender. A good chance, he cuts back in on his left foot and faced by the defender shoots from 14 yards but drags it wide.

Riyad Mahrez crosses from the right but it's hacked away. That delivery came after we'd had 21 players in the Newcastle half, with only Ederson staying out.

The away side look like they'll be 5-4-1 out of possession but it's not fully settled so I'll come back to you with more. The pattern though looks like it'll be obvious.

    BenitezImage source, .

Newcastle's style of play against Chelsea seemed to draw widespread criticism as Rafa Benitez opted for a deep, defensive setup. Their approach so far this term means they have the lowest possession figure in the Premier League.

Expect more of the same today as Guardiola's pass masters do their thing. Can the Toon frustrate them?

Goal difference can make a huge difference come the end of the season.

Rafa Benitez is trying to get the best out of his team but it’s not the kind of football (in the game against Chelsea last weekend), external the fans will want to see at home.

Now we have some Beatles 'Hey Jude' ringing out as the City fans apply their own lyrics. Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho embrace and share a few words of guidance. I think Newcastle are going to go for the old-school team huddle here... yes they do. Unity after a week where there has been talk of tension.

Mr Guardiola's eyes will be pinned on the black and white shirts when the ball gets rolling to study just what Newcastle intend to bring. If Rafa Benitez is content to sit and soak up pressure at home against Chelsea you'd expect he will ask for more of the same here.

Maybe it's time to mix it up though as whatever they've been doing before hardly produced great results in these testing away games.

Last season, Newcastle lost all eight Premier League away fixtures against the teams that finished in the top eight of the table.

Newcastle were smashed out of the Carabao Cup. I know they go on about Mike Ashley - and they have a point - but he isn't going to change. They have to get on with what they have got. This will be a very tough game.

  20. Why Pep loves Septemberpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Man City v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

    Jonathan Pearce
BBC Match of the Day commentator

Rafa Benitez will try and stifle Manchester City, just as he did at St James' Park last season and against Chelsea there last weekend. On both occasions he came close but failed.

Are Newcastle's defenders good enough to strangle games? They're also very poor away. Given the strained relationship between Benitez and owner Mike Ashley, I have grave concerns for them this season.

City will equal an 81-year-old club record if they get back to winning ways. It would be a 10th successive top-flight victory against a specific opponent.

This is when Pep Guardiola revs up his teams. He's unbeaten in September as a manager in 41 competitive games over the last eight years. It's a home win for me.
