Watford manager Javi Gracia speaking to BBC Sport:

"We were much better in the second half than in the first. United played better in the first half, they created more chances and had more possession. In the second we were able to take a step forward to have more possession and to create more chances. In the last seconds we had two good chances to score. Today we don’t get the points but I can be proud of the second half.

"In the first half we conceded two goals, after that the game was tough, we needed to press higher. We suffered some difficult situations, but we had to try and score two goals. It was a pity.

"The first half we spoke about that, we need to play better, wanted to have the option to get a point. I think we did well, playing against United they are a good team, we competed. We can be proud of our players and supporters, they never stopped singing even when we were losing.

"I prefer David de Gea makes saves with the national team, not now.

"I’m happy I’m pleased with our behaviour in the five games, we tried to keep our level, good results bad results, it’s about knowing what we are. We have showed we have kept our spirit against a good team like United."

"That is the reason why he is the best, why he is Manchester United's goalkeeper and when you are goalkeeper of a big team, even if you don't touch the ball for the whole game you have to be decisive."

"I don't know, I know that [the referee] had a very good game, if it is a second yellow or no, I am really far away from this position."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "Very important. With this win we keep the same points as Spurs and Arsenal. We have that distance of four and six points to the other top teams, if we don't win this match obviously that distance goes a little more.

"They are a good team, they know how to create problems to the top teams. And I told the players at half-time - sometimes I am sorry we don't have a camera in the dressing room because I told them what exactly happened - that it could be a match to win four or five nil, or to be in real trouble.

"In the second half we decreased our intensity, then the goal happened, then the game is open. I think this last Romelu Lukaku tackle as a right-back shows everything. I think he is the image of the team, a team that played very well in long periods in the first half. But we had the experience also here last season where they don't give up and when the game is open they believe."

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster, speaking to BT Sport:

"I think we maybe got carried away with four out of four, thinking we're something we're not. But in the second half we played to our strengths, we looked like we were the only side going to score as the game went on. Fair play to the goalie, producing some world class saves.

"De Gea is top class. Any young goalkeeper out there just watch him, you'll learn a lot."

Manchester United

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, speaking to BT Sport:

"Credit to Watford. We were too sloppy but it's another win and we have to keep going. We had a few good runs from Lingard, Sanchez and myself, I scored, Chris [Smalling] scored, we had to try and score a third but we were sloppy, we have to look again at the images.

"The manager said to us we were playing well but not great, he made us humble at half time. We ground the result out, that’s what we need to do, to catch the teams above us."

Manchester United

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, speaking to BT Sport:

"When you're on top and 2-0 up there's always danger if they get that goal. It was a battle and we had to dig in."

On his spectacular goal:

"You always hope they fall to you like that. On my left foot, it was a nice one."

David Bushell: Controlled most of the game. Saw the game out when we had to. Fellaini outstanding. Where's the crisis?

RegularJon: Good win that, restored a little faith in Jose and the boys. Need to kick on now. Pogba and De Gea world class Smalling and Lindelof dealt with the big forwards well.

It was a great second half effort from the players and supporters, valiant considering they were second best in the first half. They didn't let United dictate, United wanted to sit on their 2-0 lead.

Watford threw everything trying to get into the game, they got the goal. Doucoure and Capoue were more dominant.

Unfortunately the run finishes but they can hold their heads up high.

So Watford's fine run of consecutive wins comes to an end. But they're still up there - four out of five ain't bad. They pushed United hard at the end, having looked a long way out of it at half-time.

Manchester United move up to eighth in the table. They're six points short of the leaders.

Ashley Young gives De Gea a little slap round the chops. I think that means well done. More big pats on the back for the Spanish keeper as he makes his way down the tunnel.
