And finally, more from birthday boy Manuel Pellegrini on Match of the Day: "I was not worried about my birthday today - I just wanted to win the game - it was the best gift my players could give me.

"I think that we continued playing the same way we have done, but the best thing we did here, we went for the game from the first minute, we didn't wait for Everton to go.

"We believe in what we are doing and we are not going to change. I said last time after we lost I will accept advice but I was not going to change what we are doing."

On Lucas Perez: "Always when you are not winning there are a lot of stories - this week it was about the team leak. I called Lucas [Perez] to get ready to play, but [Michail] Antonio was already ready so played as I needed to make the change. I don't have any problem with the player."

West Ham goalscorer Andriy Yarmolenko, speaking to Match of the Day: "I am very happy for my team winning and who scores, I don't care.

"We worked hard this week because our results have been very bad. We must show the fans that we work hard for this club."

  6. 'No problem with Perez'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 16 September 2018

    Everton 1-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

More from Pellegrini on Lucas Perez, who looked set to come on for Marko Arnautovic only for Michail Antonio to be used instead: "Maybe it looks and you can think he refuses.

"When Arnautovic was injured, I called him because he was making his warm-up, but when he was back sitting on the bench and Antonio was working I called him because he was ready.

"I don't have any problem with the player."

  7. 'I am convinced by our way of playing'published at 18:24 British Summer Time 16 September 2018

    Everton 1-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

Here's West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports: "The birthday is the last thing I was thinking, I was worried about the game because I was absolutely convinced we must finish these bad results. We were unlucky to lose the last games.

"It's easy to say we were going to change, but I was absolutely convinced this is the way. We score goals and always try to continue scoring goals.

"I saw the players working every day of the week. We are working one way, and maybe in the match not able to repeat that. We tried to continue working during the week this way.

"I am convinced and the players are convinced."

  8. 'We didn't play well'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2018

    Everton 1-3 West Ham

    Everton

Everton manager Marco Silva on Match of the Day: "We didn't play with enough quality to win the match.

"We started well with good pace and intensity, but we made mistakes, and at that moment we didn't react well.

"But even after the 1-0 we had a clear chance to score, we didn't perform well, but they had three chances and they scored three goals. We had four or five chances and we scored one goal.

"At this level we have to take care to always be in a good position and create more chances.

"It's a tough result for us. A club like us to lose 3-1 at home is always tough. We have to react - there's nothing more to it. We have to react to the mistakes we made."

On Morgan Schneiderlin's early substitution: "It was a tactical change, nothing more."

  9. 'Massively disappointing'published at 18:19 British Summer Time 16 September 2018

    Everton 1-3 West Ham

    Everton

Everton defender Mason Holgate on Match of the Day: "It was massively disappointing. We went in expecting to win so it's three points dropped.

"We started well and then they scored and after that we were shaky. We would have expected to create more chances, too.

"Losing 3-1 at home is never good enough for us, especially, with respect, against a team who didn't have any points yet.

"I just think the whole performance was disappointing from our team point of view. But it's still early days with the new manager and I think we're good enough to turn it around."

West Ham goalscorer Marko Arnautovic, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was really important for us to come back and put a performance in after our first four results.

"We start from the goalkeeper and everyone did an unbelievable job today. The midfield was great and then it's our job to score goals.

"[Andriy] Yarmolenko was screaming for the ball [before I provided the assist] and I'm happy for his goal. I hope it's going to be a good week now."

On his injury: "I don't know - we need to check now. It's not my calf, it's behind my knee. We will have to see for next week because it is hurting now."

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former West Ham winger Matthew Etherington on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I thought Everton were poor on the day, West Ham by far better side. Felipe Anderson was outstanding. Arnautovic got another goal but the injury is a worry he is a big player for them. Declan Rice was amazing.

"Everton don’t have a goalscorer, Cenk Tosun had some chances and he couldn’t score."

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

With all the players West Ham have and their quality, every single of their players in claret and blue has played well today.

I think West Ham to get out the mess they are in they all have to play well, not just one or two taking a ride on the back of others.
