  1. 'I was disappointed by Brighton'published at 12:28 British Summer Time 23 September 2018

    Brighton 1-2 Tottenham

    Danny Murphy
Former Liverpool midfielder on Match of the Day

I was really surprised by Brighton's approach. When a team is low on confidence like Spurs you have an obligation to get after them and test them.

I understand respecting a good opposition - you can't just run around and press for the sake of it - but in the beginning of the game Brighton didn't impose themselves. Paulo Gazzaniga and the Spurs defence had too many touches with no pressure on. It set the tone for the game.

You've got to start on the front foot and then you can take your foot off the gas. I was disappointed by Brighton.

Tottenham made heavy weather of it on a wet and windy south Coast, but Harry Kane's penalty and Erik Lamela's first-time finish proved enough to withstand a late Brighton onslaught that featured an injury-time goal from Anthony Knockaert but no more.

  3. 'Gundogan was special'published at 12:26 British Summer Time 23 September 2018

    Cardiff 0-5 Manchester City

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on Match of the Day

Ilkay Gundogan was special. He filled the void of not having David Silva in the side perfectly. He was willing to make things happen. Cardiff gave him too much space. It was his all round game – his deliveries into the box. It was a brilliant performance. He was the stand-out but Raheem Sterling was great and Riyad Mahrez got a couple of goals too.

Manchester City were back in express-steamroller mode after their midweek hiccup against Lyon.

The champions flattened Cardiff, recording 79% possession and 21 shots to Cardiff's two.

They lurk just two points back from leaders Liverpool.

  5. 'Another terrific performance'published at 12:22 British Summer Time 23 September 2018

    Liverpool 3-0 Southampton

    Danny Murphy
Former Liverpool midfielder on Match of the Day

Liverpool last year only won once after playing in the Champions League midweek. They've already done it this year, they've won seven on the spin, everything is looking good and victory over Southampton was another terrific performance.

Liverpool's next four matches are two meetings against Chelsea, a trip to Napoli and then a home clash with Premier League champions Manchester City.

All of those will probably put up more opposition than the Saints, who were three goals deep at the break.

Mohamed Salah scored to move to three from his opening seven matches - only one less than he managed at the same stage in his bonanza debut campaign.

  7. 'No fear factor at Old Trafford'published at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 September 2018

    Manchester United 1-1 Wolves

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on Match of the Day

Wolves' front three of Helder Costa, Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota are a real threat. They will score more goals with a bit more care in the final third.

They caused Manchester United all kinds of problems. They are as accomplished a side I’ve ever seen from the Championship. They tired a bit towards the end but they deserved their point and probably a little bit more on the day. I was really impressed. I think they can finish in the top half. There are really positive signs for Wolves.

Teams are going to Old Trafford now without that fear factor. Manchester United have had a difficult start but I can’t see them competing with Liverpool and Manchester City, I really can’t.

First though, let's have a spin though yesterday's Premier League results.

Wolves took a fully-deserved point at Old Trafford with Joao Moutinho stroking home to cancel out Fred's first goal for the hosts.

It could have been even better for Nuno Espirito Santo's side, who had eight shots on target to United's six.

That is the first of two Premier League fixtures this afternoon.

Your tea-time fare is Arsenal v Everton. The Toffees have not won in 22 years away to the Gunners.

So, a gimme for Unai Emery? Or could Theo Walcott stick one on his old employers?

  10. New stage, old rivalrypublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 23 September 2018

West Ham v Chelsea (13:30 BST)

The Hammers may have upped sticks, leaving the Chicken Run, external in favour of the shopping centres and parkland of the London Stadium, but today's opening fixture is still a seismic clash of cultures, histories and two of London's proudest clubs.

Chelsea are seeking to reclaim the top spot poached by Liverpool yesterday.

West Ham are looking to build to the unexpected demolition job that they wrought on Everton last weekend.

    It's going to get tasty.
