Fans line up to welcome the Liverpool and Manchester City team buses on their arrival at Anfield. It looks like a different crowd to the one that met City’s team bus in the Champions League earlier this year...

    Houllier on Manchester City:

"They have changed style since Pep [Guardiola] came. The team is a strong unit. We knew they could play football, but they can also play strong football.

"Sometimes they are bullied but they stay strong and they find an opening at some point. What I like about this team is whatever the position, they impose their style of play and they are more penetrating, more quick at going forward than the teams before [at City].

On how Liverpool gained an edge on City in games last season: "I would say they needed three factors. One, to play with high intensity, two, to play to their face, and three a bit of luck because you need luck sometimes at the top level.

"The 4-3 game was probably the game of the season, I don't expect Pep will be asking his players to stay at the back, they will attack. There will be plenty of chances for both sides and normally you should have some goals."

Houllier on Jurgen Klopp's transfer business in 2018:

"To me, the main signing was Virgil van Dijk. People thought it was expensive [when he joined from Southampton for £75m in January] but I didn't, he was the only one on the market to be at that level.

"The second one is Allison this summer because they needed a goalkeeper for real strength at the back. Plus when you have [Naby] Keita, who will gradually fit in the English league, and when you have the three they have up front it's a very, very strong side.

"I think Jurgen has brought a lot in terms of spirit and mental energy to the team, but also in terms of tactical shrewdness. He brought the style - his style of play - which is a very attacking style and very demanding physically... but his team are entertaining, always good to watch and very strong, very solid."

Gerard Houllier on the stature of Liverpool and Manchester City among Europe's elite clubs:

"They [Liverpool and City] belong to the top five or six of European teams at the moment.

"You may look and say that Manchester City didn't go beyond the quarter-finals in the Champions League last season, but they were beaten by Liverpool.

"I think both teams should qualify for [at least] the quarter-finals again this season, and after that point it's a matter of luck. Don't forget Liverpool were outstanding until the final when they lost Mo Salah."

Now then. Here's a chance for Southampton.

Ryan Bertrand is hauled down on the left side of the box for a free-kick with some potential.

Just to spoil it a bit the ref books Bertrand for arguing the official had placed the ball further back than where the offence took place.

    Ps. He had.

It is just relentless. Chelsea's waves of attacks keep coming. I mean, in fairness to Southampton, they are putting in some good blocks. But that's not a game strategy.

The Blues are already into double figures for corners.

    Southampton 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea are going to score again soon.

Only a last-ditch Hoedt tackle in the box denies Hazard another sight of goal. It comes at the concession of a corner, which Chelsea waste.

    Eden Hazard

    Who else?

The little Belgian is on fire and he opens the scoring with a well-taken effort from inside the box. Ross Barkley deserves plenty of credit too. He won the ball back 25 yards from goal with a well-timed tackle on Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and played the neat pass to essentially lay the goal on a plate for his team-mate.

Bit of a sucker punch for Saints, who had started to edge back into the game.

Chelsea want a penalty. They won't get one, though. Wesley Hoedt times his challenge to perfection to slide in and end Olivier Giroud's chance of a shot. The French striker throws himself over the defender's challenge, but he's getting nothing for that.

Oh, Danny Ings, how have you missed?!

Southampton break down the left through Ryan Bertrand and his cross is everything Ings needs it to be - right in front of him to attack. Somehow, though, the unmarked striker volleys his effort over the bar from only a few yards out.

It has taken them some time to warm up, but Saints are in this game now.

Aidan Mifsud: What are Chelsea wearing! How does their blue clash with Southampton's red and black?

Ed Woodhouse: Quite a rancid kit from Chelsea but actually I approve. Reminiscent of when they had Mark Stein and Dmitri Kharine.

Robert Gallacher: I'd love to know the sales figures for this Chelsea away kit...it's truly a sight for sore eyes!
