The only scenario I can relate to tonight is in 2012 when Mark Hughes and I left Manchester City to move to QPR.

We had to play Manchester City in the last game of the season with us needing to stay up and them needing to win for the Premier League title.

Roberto Mancini had replaced Mark Hughes. And I still wanted to show them I could have been there. Thankfully the one outcome I didn't envisage, City winning and us losing and staying up, happened.

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

Everton defender Kurt Zouma: “We know Monday will be another fight at home and we want to win in front of our fans. They deserve it.

“In the last game [against Newcastle], we couldn’t win but we did not lose and are still unbeaten after five games at Goodison.

“Let’s keep it up. We have another game, a tough game, but a chance to win – so let’s try to win it.”

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Goodison Park

Watford's fans were reportedly preparing a welcoming committee for former manager Marco Silva involving toy snakes as a sign of their unhappiness at his behaviour at Vicarage Road last season.

They feel he was never the same after an initial approach from Everton was rejected by the Watford board, who later sacked the Portuguese boss.

On current evidence the toy snake salesmen will not have done a roaring trade as there is not much of a contingent from Watford inside Goodison Park at this stage.

Marco Silva has not managed a club for more than one season since his first job. He is already on his third English team, having only moved to the country early last year.

He took over at Hull for the second half of 2017-18, before leaving at the end of the season and moving to Watford, who axed him six months later.

Before that he had managed Estoril for almost three years and Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos for one season each.

  16. 'We need to improve something'published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

Watford head coach Javi Gracia: "In my opinion we are playing well. I like to be demanding of my players because in this way we will improve, we'll have more options to improve our results as well.

"But in this moment I'm not worried about if in the last games we weren't able to get some points.

"I think the players have confidence in the way we are playing, the way we are working in all the different games.

"But they also know we need to improve something to have better results, to finish better.

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

This is Marco Silva's current club versus Marco Silva's former club.

I would imagine it will be competitive on the pitch and maybe in the boardroom too, bearing in mind Watford were unhappy with Everton's initial approach for him last year.

In terms of the game, the Toffees are only three points above the Hornets in the table, but in much better form.

Watford, who did not win in November, are yet to win in December, but have been competitive when I have seen them, even though they have taken only one point from their past five matches. I don't see them getting anything here either, however.

  18. Contrasting fortunespublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

Richarlison has scored three goals in his last three home Premier League appearances, one more than he scored in his previous 22.

The Brazilian has scored seven goals in 13 Premier League outings this season, two more than he managed in 38 games for Watford in 2017-18.

Roberto Pereyra is Watford's top scorer in the Premier League this season with five goals, but he has not scored or assisted in six hours and 33 minutes.

  19. Richarlison, good value after all?published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

Richarlison's £50m price tag was ridiculed in the summer, but his value has now risen according to CIES Football Observatory figures.

After seven goals this season, and breaking into the Brazil squad, they reckon he is now worth £68.96m.

Watford striker Isaac Success, 22, is now worth £10.66m, 195% more than at the start of September. However he did cost them £12.5m in 2016.

  20. 'On Monday he’s the enemy'published at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    Everton v Watford (20:00 GMT)

Watford captain Troy Deeney has been talking about coming up against Richarlison, who left the club for Everton in the summer for an initial £35m which could rise to £50m.

“I wasn’t disappointed [when he left] because you can understand it,” said Deeney. “Business-wise it was a no-brainer for the money.

“You can see his potential daily. His enthusiasm for football is up there and he’s now getting the national team [Brazil] looking at him.

“I don’t want to talk him up too much because I’m going to have to smash him on Monday.

    “On Monday he’s the enemy.”
