Well then, Manuel Pellegrini keeps his title as the "King of the Festive Period" - adding to his victories as Manchester City boss with a first win in charge of West Ham during this schedule.

He remains the Premier League's top festive boss and has never lost a game in the English top flight between 26 December and 4 January...

That's it from us for tonight, but if you're panicking at the thought of a whole 36 hours or so until the Premier League returns then why not check out Michael Emons' report to relive that cracker on the south coast.

    Until next time....

  2. 'We showed good character'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    Southampton

Saints captain Oriol Romeu: "They punished us, so that's a lesson to be learned.

"We have got a clear structure and a lot of things to be done as individuals and as a team. We know our jobs and know every time what we have to do.

"Although we didn't win, the team was showing good character. This league does not allow you to slow down even a gear."

  3. 'It's an intensive time now'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton

More from Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's an intensive time now, it's one game after the other. We have two days and then face Man City and Chelsea. It's the Premier League. When you have a chance to get points, you are not allowed to give it away too easily. We saw we have a lot of steps to go.

"We learned that against such teams, it's not possible to give them the opportunities we gave them. To give away a goal from your own corner, it's not possible in your own stadium. We were hungry today but not that speedy like we were in the past two weeks.

"It's a shame we were with Hojbjerg and Obafemi today. Obafemi, we could have used his speed. Everybody faces injuries and so do we."

  4. 'We wasted energy'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    Southampton

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu: "It's frustrating. We wanted that third win in a row. We wanted to feel stronger (at home) and feel we are a tough team to play against with our fans. We gave those goals away too easily.

"We couldn't get the equaliser, but we tried everything.

"We had energy at the beginning but didn't have the ball that much and when we were going for the pressing situations we were not getting the ball back - that's more energy wasted and less energy to make those runs when you have the ball."

  5. 'Anderson's goals important'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to BBC Sport: "December has been a good month for the team, not just for me, for the team. We played a very good game from the beginning. We didn't allow Southampton to reach our box. We started one goal down but we drew level as soon as we could and then got the second goal.

"I think one of the most important things is that we play the same way away as at home. We try to continue doing our work. The better thing we did was to stop them being near our box.

"Anderson's run of goals is important for him and the team. It's not easy for a midfield player to score so many goals by this stage of the season. He can change the score of the game in any moment.

"It's consistency that is important for us. The important thing after our start to the season was to reduce the gap to all the other teams. I think if we continue play this way, we will improve the number of points we can get. With our winning mentality, it's important to finish as high up the table as we can."

  6. 'Anderson will keep continue improving'published at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    West Ham United

More from Pellegrini, on Felipe Anderson's performance: "Of course he is a different player, a player that in every game makes important things.

"I think he will continue improving.

"He still loses too many balls, maybe because he must understand the Premier League is difficult if you keep the ball in your feet.

"In every game he makes important plays and that's the most great thing that he has."

  7. 'We didn't make a good game'published at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: "The way we lost it was too easy today, we didn't play such a good game - we had the chance to win but that's disappointing because we didn't make a good game.

"If you give it away like we did then you don't deserve to (win). We were not so fresh and not so speedy, sharp to win the second balls.

"We ran a lot without the ball, at half-time we changed a few things put early pressure on and scored the first goal. It was too easy, one from outside the box and one from a corner we had."

  8. 'We were balanced the whole game'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports: "All the credit (to the players). We played a very good game from the first minute to win the game and we were very balanced in the whole game.

"We worked mostly in the opposition side and we defended very well. They didn't have too many options.

"It's important we drew level immediately and scored the winning goal."

  10. 'Maybe we were a bit leggy'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Southampton

Southampton forward Nathan Redmond, speaking to Sky Sports: "We went 1-0 up, and we had a few chances we should have put away but you can't give that quality time on the ball. We have to work on that tomorrow.

"We're not too sure how that game got away from us. Maybe it's the volume of games at the moment. It's rest, recover, play, rest, recover. Maybe we were a bit leggy in terms of pressing. But managing the game when we're ahead, we have to look at that.

"We can only go back to the training ground tomorrow morning and look at the positives and negatives. We've made strides from five or six weeks ago but it's only small strides."

  11. Postpublished at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    West Ham United

Aaron Cresswell, speaking to Sky Sports about Felipe Anderson: "He's been fantastic and hopefully that continues.

"It was a tough start, losing the first four games, but he's been our in-form man and is our top goalscorer."

West Ham's Declan Rice, speaking to Sky Sports: "You could see in the first half we were getting chances, getting the ball out wide. The manager said to keep going and Felipe has popped up with two superb goals.

"The first half of the season is out of the way. We are setting ourselves up for a good second half."

  15. 'Anderson's getting a reputation'published at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Anderson's very good. No doubt about it. His role on that left hand side is to get the ball and drift inside, and he's very effective. Is it right to compare Anderson to Dimitri Payet? We are very quick to compare. Payet was a fantastic player for them. Certainly tonight, he could have done no more. That was throughout the season. As soon as he settled into this environment, he's been fantastic. He's starting to get a reputation now and rightly so.

Well, that was the second half we were looking for.

Nathan Redmond, with the help of Angelo Ogbonna, put Southampton ahead with 50 minutes gone.

But within 168 seconds West Ham were level thanks to Felipe Anderson's strike, and six minutes later the Hammers' top scorer put them in front.

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Just about right, this scoreline. West Ham have had the extra quality, and Southampton have lacked the cutting edge. I did not get Ralph Hasenhuttl's decision to take off Danny Ings at all.

Southampton, when they get into good areas, have shown a great final ball. What we haven't seen is numbers willing to attack those quality balls.

Andy Carroll is now playing as a holding midfielder...

He strings a pass into the path of Felipe Anderson and the winger skips past his man before firing low towards goal, but Alex McCarthy turns it wide.

Smart slide pass from Nathan Redmond to find Shane Long, who feeds it wide to Yan Valery.

But the wing-back's cross is high and deep and that's easy for Lukasz Fabianski to claim.
