    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

I'm not going to say too little too late, because that's the commentator's curse. But that's a change Southampton should have made a while ago.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is on for Southampton, last roll of the dice...

Southampton's players are getting in each other's way. Shane Long toe-pokes a ball he didn't need to when in an offside position, with Matt Targett ready to swing a cross in.

    Michail Antonio has other ideas...

The wing-back sets off from inside his own half and drives across the top of the area before unleashing a wild left-footed effort that drifts harmlessly wide.

    Great play, until the finish.

Michael Scarn: Is it just me, or should substitutes not be allowed to bring on pieces of paper with tactical plans on them?

  11. Take note...published at 21:23 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    BBC Radio 5 live

John Murray: Charlie Austin has handed a note to Stuart Armstrong after coming on as a substitute.

Steve Claridge: That's in vogue now isn't it? The passing on of notes.

John Murray: Do you ever do that at Salisbury?

Steve Claridge [who is Salisbury's manager]: No.

John Murray:They'd struggle to read your handwriting, wouldn't they?

    Steve Claridge: Very true.

  12. Postpublished at 82 mins

    Southampton 1-2 West Ham

Nice interchange between Stuart Armstrong and Charlie Austin as the midfielder's flick allows the sub to cut inside and unleash a goalbound effort, but there's about three West Ham defenders diving in front of it and the loose ball is leaped on by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

  13. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 80 mins

    And here comes Charlie Austin...

Ralph Hasenhuttl brings on a striker for a defender, with Maya Yoshida heading off.

Austin has a note for Stuart Armstrong too, wonder what words of wisdom the Saints boss is sending on?

Matt Wilkinson: Can’t see the logic of Hassenhuttl taking off a goalscorer in Ings to bring on a non goalscorer in Long. Especially if you have another goalscorer on the bench called Austin. Looks like you wrecked it Ralph!!

Jeff in Sandown: Andy Carroll runs like he's towing a skip..No where near fit enough. "Just saying like".

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

Amid the earlier madness, Southampton brought on Shane Long for Danny Ings.

The forward hasn't had much to work with so far, mind.

Mark Noble is now coming on for the Hammers as Manuel Pellegrini looks to tighten things up - forward Lucas Perez the man to make way.

  16. 'That's what you want from Lemina'published at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2018

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It's exactly what you're asking of Mario Lemina, to get into those positions. Nathan Redmond is offside in the build-up, as it turns out, but that's the first time he's made the extra man.

Another great save from Lukasz Fabianski!

Nathan Redmond rolls the ball into the path of Mario Lemina and his low strike is tipped wide by the West Ham goalkeeper.

Yannick's a fan of Felipe Anderson...

West Ham go right this time with Robert Snodgrass and then look for Michail Antonio on the overlap, but Jannick Vestergaard has been Southampton's best defender and is alert to cover again.

Kyle: Brilliant again from Felipe Anderson. He surely has to be the best player outside of the top 6. What a player he is. He is definitely one of the best foreign signings to of recent seasons a joy to watch.

Tim, Marlow: Cracking game, this - in what other league, anywhere in the world, would you get this level of excitement from a match between the teams in 12th and 16th places?

Gumbo74: Clearly obstruction is no longer a foul in Association football, blatant penalty for the foul on Snodgrass. And has Andy Carroll got a NYE party he can't miss? He looks as if he is trying his uppermost to get booked, or worse!
