Pinda: Silly from Eric Bailly, He has been given his chance finally and he's wasted it despite a very solid performance

babyboomer: Down to 10 men & Calamity Jones comes on. Is a 3 goal lead enough with 10 minutes + added time left?

Rhys: Huge improvement in MUFC. But this may typify the next 5 months. Good attacking play but a naivety summed up by that foul from Bailly.

That is an automatic three-match ban for Eric Bailly.

It means he will miss Wednesday's trip to Newcastle, the FA Cup tie with Reading and the Premier League visit to Tottenham on 13 January.

    Eric Bailly (Man United)

No amount of apologetic hand gestures is going to help Eric Bailly avoid red there.

The Manchester United defender flies into a challenge on Ryan Fraser, legs scissoring and out of control.

None of the ball, all of the man and he is walking for the third time in his United career.

PJ: The BIG Rom comes off the bench to join the party and get a well needed goal! Brilliant all round display by the lads!

Paul: Harsh on Bournemouth. Denied a stonewall penalty and then an offside goal given against them. Seems United really are back...

Sonny: Bournemouth should have had a pen and Utd should be down to 10, Lukaku goal offside.

    Lukaku did look marginally offside.

  9. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 77 mins

    Man Utd 4-1 Bournemouth

Paul Pogba is a post's width away from his hat-trick.

United's World Cup winner drills low and hard from 20 yards and only the fingertips of Asmir Begovic - diverting the ball onto the base of the goal - can deny him.

    Talk about an immediate impact.

Lukaku had one involvement, nodding the ball back for Jesse Lingard before darting into the box to score with his second.

Eddie Howe is not impressed. He thinks the linesman missed an offside.

The ball was ricocheting about and Bournemouth had a few chances to clear it. Asmir Begovic has to come out and commit and the striker prods it past him.

GOAL - Man Utd 4-1 Bournemouthpublished at 72 mins

    Romelu Lukaku

He has only just come on in place of Marcus Rashford, and Romelu Lukaku surely puts the game to bed.

Paul Pogba lofts a pinpoint ball over the top of the Bournemouth defence and into Lukaku's path.

The Belgian finishes with a good low shot for his eighth goal in seven appearances against Bournemouth in the Premier League. More than a hint of offside about that one, mind.

  13. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 70 mins

    Man Utd 3-1 Bournemouth

Eric Bailly clatters studs into the face of Charlie Daniels as the Ivory Coast international clears the danger in his own box.

He got the ball but also landed an unintentional kung-fu kick on the Bournemouth man.

There are some half-hearted penalty appeals from the visitors, but they don't land with Lee Mason.

    Man Utd 3-1 Bournemouth

Ashley Young blazes over when well placed but the offside flag was already up against the Manchester United captain.

A bit of a lull in the game as United keep the ball out of reach and Bournemouth struggle to stage any sort of comeback.

  19. High presspublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2018

    Man Utd 3-1 Bournemouth

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

One of the allegations levelled against Jose Mourinho at Manchester United was that his tactics had not moved with the times.

Chief evidence for this was that they did not employ the high press, favoured by the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino and tended to drop off in defence and let the opposition come to them.

They don't really high press now but the enthusiastic chasing of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford earned enthusiastic applause from the home fans when it forced Bournemouth to concede a throw-in close to their own penalty area.
