  1. 'Incredible to watch'published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 3-0 Burton

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It's incredible to watch the way City are manipulating the ball. When you think there is no danger, they move the ball so quickly, and they get in behind your back four all of a sudden.

    Gabriel Jesus

Again, Ilkay Gundogan is the architect. You just don't get passes like that in League One. He chips another of those 'Xavi' passes over the top which undoes the defence, David Silva squares it to Gabriel Jesus, who has time to take a touch and then fire in off the base of the post.

VAR is checked as Jesus was offside when the first pass was played - but he wasn't interfering at that stage. Goal stands!

The Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough is chatting away to first team coach Andy Garner inside the technical area. It rather looks like they are trying to work out where they go from here.

Maybe Burton aren't parking the bus because they're all stuck on the motorway?

    Man City 2-0 Burton

Away goals don't count in the semi-finals this season. But Burton may as well get one anyway to keep this interesting.

City have score 89 goals this season now. It's the second week of January.

  6. 'Akins was ball watching'published at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 2-0 Burton

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

That is good patience from City, who have waited for that one player to switch off and then run off the back of them. Lucas Akins was ball watching and Leroy Sane got in behind. Gabriel Jesus gets his first goal.

  7. From Belfast to Bremen, and now Burtonpublished at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 2-0 Burton

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

You might have thought Burton striker Liam Boyce would be having a quiet night tonight, with City dominating possession the way they are, but he has actually had the most touches from a Brewers player in the first 30 minutes, with 25. He's won all four of his aerial duels too.

Boyce is the only player in Burton's starting XI to cost a fee - and at £500,000 from Ross County in 2017, he is their record buy.

The Northern Ireland international has had an interesting career, playing for clubs in four countries - including a year in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen when he was a teenager.

He is Burton's top scorer this season with nine goals although, for all his touches, he has not had a shot tonight yet. Still plenty of time for that though.

    Gabriel Jesus

A wonderful pass from Ilkay Gundogan opens up the packed Burton ranks. Leroy Sane plays a one-two with Gundogan, whose return ball is beautifully waited to find Sane in behind the defence.

Bradley Collins makes a decent save from Sane, the ball pops up in the air and Gabriel Jesus is able to head the loose ball home despite being surrounded by four defenders.

Luke: Brahim Diaz looks like he was right to move. City playing the most expensive side in league cup history. 2/3 of the starting XI tonight have been more than happy to sit on the bench all season to get a start against Burton

Mike: Another great turn out for a semi from the City fans...

Both sides have had just the one shot on target so far. Did we expect more from the hosts?

  11. 'I want to see them keep their standards'published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 1-0 Burton

As good as City are, they still have to stay on their game. I just want to see them keep their standards up.

  12. CLOSE!published at 25 mins

    Man City 1-0 Burton

Another good attack from the Brewers, that man Lucas Akins causing trouble on the left of the area but he's closed down and City can break away.

It comes to Gabriel Jesus on the left, he cuts inside and threads a low shot just wide of the far corner. Bradley Collins in the Burton goal was struggling to reach that..

  13. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Man City 1-0 Burton

David Silva from that 'half-space' on the left of the penalty area threads two passes right across the line of the six-yard box in the space of about 30 seconds. Two good clearances from Ben Turner.

    Man City 1-0 Burton

Another shot from Burton as Jamie Allen ends up slamming a shot way over from 25 yards. It was never threatening Arijanet Muric but again, the League One side's approach should be applauded.

At the other end Ilkay Gundogan gets his body language all wrong and slices a shot wide.

  15. 'Linesman got it spot on'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 1-0 Burton

    Dion Dublin

The linesman has got it spot on. It is a lovely dink into Riyad Mahrez and he caressed it into the top corner. Fortunately for Burton, he was offside.

  16. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 18 mins

    Man City 1-0 Burton

What a finish! Riyad Mahrez puts the ball into the net with a wonderful volley, sort of intentionally off the outside of his foot/ankle, but the flag was raised. He was just offside too.

  17. Akins dancing down the left wingpublished at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Man City 1-0 Burton

    Chris Bevan
    BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

Kyle Walker had better be careful tonight - Burton left winger Lucas Akins was a childhood ballet star - also specialising in jazz and tap - before deciding on a football career instead.

He certainly showed quick feet to make space for that cross for Burton's big chance but just a shame about Marcus Harness's footwork at the end... Bruno Tonioli would not have approved.

  18. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Man City 1-0 Burton

Good play again from Liam Boyce, who spins his man inside the area and looks to get a shot away but he's tackled. Corner.

Burton look a threat when they attack.

It seems like Pep wants a respectable margin of goals in this first leg so that he has the opportunity to play youngsters in the second, and I'm OK with that!

David Silva frees Leroy Sane down the left, he stands up a cross but there's nobody there. Burton are to be applauded, they are really having a go. Premier League sides park more buses than this at the Etihad.
