I wouldn’t be surprised if Barcelona start the second leg in the same way as they finished. They’ll play 4-4-1-1 and sit in.

Anfield is the X-factor for Liverpool but I think this is a step too far for them.

Messi did not dictate the game tonight. He was not really in the game but, like we’ve seen Ronaldo do, he came alive to be the decisive goalscorer. You have to give him credit for that.

Barcelona didn’t control the game, Liverpool pressed high but credit to the manager Valverde for changing the formation and stopping Liverpool.

Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "Lionel Messi's a phenomenal player. He's got everything. He's one of the best ever, if not the best.

"I'm delighted to be here, I feel blessed. This is the stuff I can tell my kids about. He can decide a game as and when he chooses."

  3. 'Barcelona looked unsettled'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

I haven’t seen Barcelona this unsettled in ages. Liverpool did everything you need to do against them. We should be talking about something else.

Messi looked frustrated, not liking being rushed and being surrounded by Liverpool. Barcelona had to defend deep and play long balls.

    But, then Messi changed everything.

Liverpool scored three goals against Man City in 31 minutes last year. If it becomes that type of game then why not?

We have seen today though that this is a Barcelona who can be conservative, defensive and play counter attack.

In the past, they’ve been more vulnerable in defence and I don’t think they will be adventurous at Anfield.

Wow. Another magical night. Lionel Messi will understandably grab the headlines.

600 goals for Barcelona. And his 600th was outrageous!

Liverpool can take plenty of positives from their performance. They need to carry that into this weekend's game against Newcastle.

They have a lot to do in Anfield in the second-leg of this tie but we all know that's not impossible.

Until then! I'll leave you with some of the best reaction...

  5. 'Don't know if we can play better'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    Liverpool

More from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on BT Sport: "How we caused them problems was outstanding and we controlled the game in the second half. It was bad defending for the first goal but 1-0 is not a big problem.

"Going out for the second half, I don't know if we can play much better. But they had one moment against the crossbar and then Lionel Messi's there for an easy goal, and the other one is a wonder strike. It was unsaveable."

Mike Connolly: Do wonder if that Dembele miss might come back to haunt them. Roma did it last year. If Liverpool come out and get 1 or 2 early goals at Anfield then we have a ball game.

Chris Moss: Fine margins. Barca were absolutely clinical and we wasted some really good chances. Disappointing result, but the performance was anything but disappointing. On to Saturday now.

  7. 'Our people will be there'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on BT Sport: "Let's recover now, go to Newcastle and learn from it.

"Barcelona showed they had more experience. We saw that in the moments when they stopped our rythym, going down, but that's part of the game.

"3-0 is not the easiest result but we we have another game [second leg] and our people will be there."

  8. 'Barcelona will be criticised'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

Liverpool were brave and played very well, probably better than Barcelona at the Nou Camp for most of the game.

The Spanish media actually will not be happy that Ernesto Valverde brought on a full back to play in midfield and he'll probably get criticised for that.

But, of course, they’ve won 3-0.

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on BT Sport: "Football is like this. It's about scoring goals, and they scored three and we scored none.

"Our performance was really good, the boys played a super game. But against Barcelona just a few opportunities can be enough [for them].

"I was happy with the performance, not too happy with the result. That's football. It was a hard result but we have to accept it."

Johnboy: Real Madrid in the final in 2018 and Barcelona tonight showed why it is so long since an English team won the Champions League. They win ugly. They use every trick in the book, both positive (Messi free kick) and negative (incessant diving and acting) to get a result.

Ben: Fans of any club need to stop being so delusional, who cares if you played well, had possession, had 50 shots to 1. As a fan all I care about is final score. End of, stop thinking that you deserved it because you play 'beautiful' football

Dr David: Liverpool are out of their depth. Lots of work to be done if they want to be serious contenders for domestic and European competitions

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live at the Nou Camp

I would give Liverpool a 5% chance at Anfield.

Barcelona will fancy their chances of scoring as Liverpool will have to commit. They don't have the away goal that Roma got last year when they lost the first leg 4-1 and won 3-0 against Barcelona in Italy.

We're asking Liverpool to do even better than that.

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live in the Nou Camp

Clearly, Liverpool desperately wanted an away goal.

When it went to 3-0, Allison was on his way forward for a late corner before being told to get back. Barcelona broke straight away and they should have scored a fourth.

If Liverpool can get this back, it will have to be one of their greatest nights ever.

Emma, Sheffield: People saying before the game that Liverpool dont have a weakness, but its their poor back up to their front three that is their weakness

David G: Barcelona deserves their goals but Liverpool really should have scored at least 3 of theirs. Both Salah and Mane missed routine chances.

Ammar Rao:Great effort from the lads but for Mane, Milner and Mo missing big chances the result could've been different. Biggest disappointment is we may end this season trophyless now.

A combination of the manager and Messi changed the game for Barcelona. People say that Barcelona never change the way they play but the manager Valverde made it 4-4-1-1 and it freed up Messi to make the difference.

Robin: 4 or 5 easy, clear cut, counter attacking chances for Barca to score; they mess up all of them and still win 3-0.

Alan, Seaton: When all is said and done - Liverpool did no better than Utd, both had their chances and did not take them and both of them did not have a genius like Messi

Jim: Wasteful, wasteful Liverpool what a night not to take chances those moments are the difference between trophies and not.very proud of the effort tonight boys and Barca will be examined at Anfield. It's not over

Liverpool suffered their joint-heaviest Champions League defeat, also losing 0-3 to Real Madrid in October 2014.

They have also now lost more matches in the Champions League this season (4 in 11 matches) than in all other competitions combined (3 in 38 matches).
