Managerless Sheffield Wednesday claimed a 1-0 win over Preston on Saturday under the caretaker charge of Lee Bullen.

Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew, who worked under Steve Bruce at Asston Villa, were at Hillsborough amid rumours the former Sunderland, Hull and Villa boss will be taking over.

Bullen told BBC Radio Sheffield that he think Bruce would be a good appointment

"From my point of view it looks like they (Bruce & team) are coming in but I have no confirmation either way," Bullen said.

"If that is the case I think the chairman has done the right thing. For a manager of Steve's credentials, if you get the opportunity to talk to him, you don't knock it back. He's been there and done it."

  3. 'They deserve backing'published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

    FT: Hull 3-2 Swansea

Hull defender Tommy Elphick told Sky Sports:

"We're on a good run with January round the corner, they deserve back backing and the manager is doing a hell of a job from where we were and where we've come to.

"We've got tough fixtures over the festive period but we can get up the table pretty quick with good results.

"We got a lot of quality, with great young talent and sometimes it takes a while to get to grips with the league."

  4. 'Why can't we get into the top half?'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

    FT: Hull 3-2 Swansea

Hull forward Jarrod Bowen told Sky Sports:

"It didn't start very well in the first half with the missed penalty but the staff said not to let that play on my mind and we showed a reaction.

"To get the second goal, I was over the moon and it made up for the missed penalty.

"The only way is up. In the past four games or so, we've only lost to Nottingham Forest and we've picked up good results along the way.

"We want to keep getting points on the board, why can't we get into the top half?"

Well, all over at the KCOM Stadium and who would have guessed we'd get that sort of excitement in the second half after how dire the first 45 minutes were, eh?

Hull have pulled off one of the comebacks of the season to nick a valuable three points against a lacklustre Swansea.

Now, this might be given as an own goal but it was Bersant Celina who made the impact.

The Swansea substitute makes a run into the Hull box and chips an effort towards goal but it takes a heavy deflection and goes into the net.

They couldn't complete a comeback, could they?

Norwich City went top of the Championship with a 1-0 win at Blackburn.

Boss Daniel Farke felt the win, just Blackburn's second home defeat in 32 games, was the most important of the season so far.

"We have had several outstanding performances and brilliant wins, played some nice pieces of football, and had away wins with four goals," Farke said.

"But my feeling is this is the biggest win during the whole season and really a massive win for us, especially because of the situation we had to handle during the game.

"I think in the end it was a well deserved win, especially for such a young side. Even experienced and successful sides are pretty often struggling in these types of games.

"To win this game in the end against a side that had one loss in the last 31 home games - big, big compliment to Tony Mowbray and his lads who are doing a fantastic job - it is outstanding for us and a massive win."

Play-off hopefuls Derby were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City after an error from Rams skipper Richard Keogh gifted Jamie Paterson the opener.

However, Derby boss Frank Lampard said that he would not blame the Republic of Ireland international.

"I will not hold it against him (Keogh) in the slightest because he's bailed us out many a time and he made a fantastic block in the second half," Lampard said.

"He's our leader, he's a great bloke and a mistake is going to happen in the course of a season to the absolute best of them. So I have no qualms with Richard, he doesn't have to say or think about it.

"It happens, nobody wants to make those mistakes and it changed the game because they would have had a feeling of not being in the game."

    Madness.

The corner that follows eventually works to Jarrod Bowen who mazes his way past defender after defender, works the ball onto his left foot and coolly finishes from inside the box.

Hull have finally got on the scoresheet and they deserve it thanks to this excellent counter-attacking goal.

Kamil Grosicki works well on the wing and tees up Fraizer Campbell who plays a ball into the box which Matt Grimes manages to put into the path of Jarrod Bowen, leaving him to tap in from close range.

Mike van der Hoorn has just skied the ball from outside the box with a pretty optimistic effort from long range.

That being said, if it had've happened in about six weeks when Hull FC are at home in Super League, it would have made a decent conversion.

Brentford ended their six-game winless run with a 1-0 victory over struggling Bolton.

Neal Maupay's goal moved the Bees six points clear of the relegation zone and boss Thomas Frank said the staff were aware that Saturday's game would be "a final".

"One of the most difficult things in life is when you put a lot of work into things and don't get the reward, but today the players, staff and fans believed, stuck together and worked hard and got what they deserved," he said.

"We knew this was a final today because we could see there weren't many points between us and the relegation area.

"No-one said it but we knew and we stayed focused to get the win we deserved.

"It was a solid performance. We know we have more, but sometimes you need that win to push you on to get there."
