Three of today's 36 English Football League matches are already done and dusted.

There was an early upset in League One at Priestfield, where Gillingham shocked table-topping Portsmouth 2-0.

And remember the two League Two games that were 1-1 heading into the closing stages? As it happens, there were late goals in both, with Colin Calderwood's Cambridge winning 2-1 against Crawley and Exeter beating south west rivals Yeovil by the same scoreline.

Jose Gomes has made the first big call of his reign at Reading - 18-year-old Danny Loader looks to be their sole striker at Millwall.

He's yet to score a professional goal, appearing six times in the Championship this season.

The two sides are level towards the bottom on 19 points.

Swansea v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

Swansea City don't tend to fare very well against their former players.

Tammy Abraham, Joe Allen and Pablo Hernandez are among the ex-Swans to have scored against the Welsh side this season, with Abraham netting the winner for Aston Villa in October's reverse fixture at Villa Park.

The Chelsea loanee leads the Villa attack today at the Liberty Stadium, where he spent last season with Swansea - and he's in superb form of late, scoring nine goals in his past seven matches.

  11. League Two previewpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

We had two 13:00 GMT starts in the fourth tier - it's 1-1 in both Cambridge v Crawley and Exeter v Yeovil... no first win for Colin Calderwood at this rate.

That leaves 10 more matches in League Two, including the Sol Campbell derby between 23rd-placed Notts County - where the ex-England defender played one game in 2009 - and his bottom-of-the-table Macclesfield side.

At the top leaders Lincoln go to Crewe, MK Dons visit Cheltenham and third-placed Colchester are at home to Stevenage - that one will start at 15 minutes late after the away side's coach broke down en route to the ground.

  12. League One previewpublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

Gillingham v PortsmouthImage source, Rex Features

There was one 13:00 GMT kick-off in League One - Gillingham currently lead Portsmouth by 1-0, thanks to a goal by Josh Parker just before half-time.

Elsewhere in the third tier form side Luton will be firm favourites at Scunthorpe, who have dropped like a stone into the relegation zone.

Sunderland's Stadium of Light ground will host the biggest third-tier crowd for 39 years as we were saying earlier and they take on improving Bradford, while there's a big game at the other end as bottom side AFC Wimbledon play Plymouth, just one place above them.

What happened to the old Boxing Day derby of yore, eh? Don't get wrong, the fixture computer seems to TRY to put two teams in relative proximity together but sometimes it seems to just - go bad, for want of a better phrase.

Take the Championship for instance. I know Swansea aren't exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to local rivals but... they welcome Aston Villa? Just the 288-mile round trip.

Into League One, and if you're a Plymouth Argyle fan, I hope you've got family in London because otherwise a 408-mile round trip awaits you if you're attending your game at AFC Wimbledon.

Luton fans will have plenty of time to renew acquaintances on or in the bus, car or train to Scunthorpe - just the 283 miles there and back.

It doesn't stop in the bottom tier either.

Take Grimsby Town. They've got 270-odd miles round trip to Burslem to face Port Vale.

Someone maybe needs to tweak the algorithm?

... But things are much improved at the Stadium of Light this season

There were times during last season where you couldn't give away tickets to watch Sunderland, as they slithered painfully towards League One and back-to-back relegations.

However, with new ownership, a new manager, new players and a new optimism, fans have voted with their feet - in a more positive manner - this campaign.

Boxing Day's visit of Bradford will restore the 'Roker roar' to Wearside, as 45,500-plus fans pack into the stadium, situated on the old Wearmouth colliery site.

Nicely done. It'll be the biggest third-tier gate since the two Sheffield clubs met at Hillsborough on Boxing Day 1979.

There are always moments of drama where Boxing Day and football are concerned.

Whether it's turning up at freezing-cold Boundary Park to be told they've sold out of pies, to being stuck in an open corner of the Leppings Lane end while drizzle teems down, or even being 50 minutes late to a game at Stockport after snow delays and missing your team's goal - we've probably all endured some kind of incident.

I'm sure you can top those. Let us know. #bbcefl

  16. Jose joins the Royals familypublished at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

    Millwall v Reading (15:00 GMT)

    Jose GomesImage source, Getty Images

Portuguese manager Jose Gomes gets his first taste of Boxing Day football as an EFL manager, when his Reading entertain Millwall in a proper 'six-pointer' at the bottom end of the Championship.

He inherits a Royals side without a win in seven games, and without an away win since September.

What better way to accustom ones self with football in England than a trip to The Den eh? Mind you, Millwall aren't in great shape either. Neil Harris' side flirted with the play-offs last season but they're currently in the bottom three on goal difference.

Victory by three goals or more would lift them above their visitors in the table.

Sheff Utd v Derby (15:00 GMT)

Frank Lampard and Tom LawrenceImage source, Getty Images

Back-to-back draws have seen Derby County lose a bit of ground on Leeds and Norwich at the top of the Championship, and a win at Bramall Lane today would really help in clawing back.

Not only in terms of keeping pace, but also denting a genuine rival, as just a point and a place separates the two teams in the league.

"I'm confident because I believe in the players, but there's work to be done," boss Frank Lampard told BBC Radio Derby. "I want more and think we could have picked up more points.

"There's a small gap opening up now, so if we do have aspirations, this needs to be a really good Christmas period for us.

"Without 100% focus against Sheffield United you'll struggle."

  18. Blades of Boxing Day glorypublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

Sheff Utd v Derby (15:00 GMT)

Sheffield United have had a few nasty Boxing Days over the years - as their rivals' song goes - but under Chris Wilder it's been a time for rejoicing, rather than giving (away points).

Two years, two wins. However, making it a hat-trick might be a tough ask, as Derby County provide the opposition.

What's the secret to their form?

"It's a special time of year," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield. "They'll spend Christmas Day with their families in the morning and afternoon, then they'll get to Bramall Lane for six o'clock, we'll go through last minute preparation and spend the night in the hotel as a team.

"It worked well for us against Sunderland last year when we had a fantastic result on Boxing Day and hopefully we can get the same three points."

  19. Can home advantage help Baggies and Boro?published at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

Middlesbrough v Sheff Wed, West Brom v Wigan (both 15:00 GMT)

Darren Moore and Tony PulisImage source, Getty Images

Just like Derby and Sheffield United, West Brom and Middlesbrough are both concerned with staying in touch with an increasingly runaway top two in Leeds and Norwich.

The Baggies have bounced back from a run of four games without a win (which coincidentally started with defeat by today's opponents Wigan), to go seven games without a loss - including wins against Leeds and Sheffield United.

Boro have spluttered a little since their sensational early season form, although victory against Reading before Christmas restored a bit of festive optimism.

Wigan and currently managerless Sheffield Wednesday are precariously placed down the bottom end of the league and are equally desperate for points. It could make for some interesting football this afternoon.

  20. Pukki powerpublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2018

    Norwich v Nott'm Forest (15:00 GMT)

He's the striker with a name like a Pokemon character, and right now there's no-one more lethal in front of goal in the EFL than Norwich's Finnish-er supreme Teemu Pukki.

They say good things come to those who wait and Pukki is the epitome of that adage. Six of his 14 goals this season have come in the last 10 minutes of games.

Sell James Maddison for £20m-plus, sign a goal machine on a free. Superb business from the Canaries, who are only kept off top spot by Leeds.
