Watford boss Javi Gracia speaking to Match of the Day: "We started well, started dominating and creating two or three good chances. We didn’t take them and we know to have the possession is not the same as to have control of the game and they would wait for the counter. We believed until the end and we strike one goal."

On substitutions: "The players starting did really well as well and I am happy with that attitude from all of them.

"When we were losing games you all ask me about the results but now we have two wins and one draw in last four and I am happy with the team. I know we must improve but if we take our chances today maybe the result would be different.

What can Watford achieve?: "We will see, game by game, everyone knows this competition is very demanding and you never know wheat will happen in the next games. We always try to do our best."

"It wasn’t out best performance. Tough match, we expected that, they do well at home, they take most of their points here and we knew that.

"We didn’t start like we wanted, they were more aggressive and faster. We finished the first half well. In the meantime had the chance to score a goal. They had a dangerous cross and created nothing more.

"Second half was the same. If you look through and analyse the match we had the best chances to score. In one moment one deflection gave them a chance to score. But we had the most chance to score.

"It is something we don’t want. We had a good run in our performance and in our results. Now we are in a different moment, we have to react. The result was not fair but that’s football, we created more chances even if we did not perform well. Now we have to prepare for the next game.

"What I spoke with the referee at the end and maybe the reason the players were angry in that moment is the referee has to control the game. It was a difficult match for both teams, It was really really difficult for the referee. We as a team have conditions to do better, I think the referee has too but that’s football. It wasn’t a good game to see."

It has been a humdinging start to the tea-time kick-off at Anfield.

After Ainsley Maitland-Niles slid in to put Arsenal ahead on 11 minutes, Roberto Firmino scored in the 14th and 16th minutes to swing the contest back the hosts way.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton speaking to BBC Sport:

"Valuable win for us against a very good team. We were holding on a bit at the end, they went to a 4-2-4 with real quality up front. But I thought we were good value for our win against a team in very good form.

"We wanted start this well in other matches, and sometimes a bit of fear sets in against the big teams. Generally at home we are good and start well. That lifted the crowd, the players had the confidence to go through the game. We had good enough passages throughout to win the game.

"For all David Button's experience it is not easy for a keeper to just step in. Mat Ryan has been good for us. Button was excellent today. You train as hard as he does, when you step into a match you’re going to play well.

"Locadia had a bit of fortune, but he was in the right place. He is used to scoring goals and had to wait a while. Pleased for him, he’s worked hard for it.

"It has been a good year on the back of two good performances against two good teams. It puts us in good stead."

Leicester City

Leicester manager Claude Puel, speaking to Match of the Day: “This was another game against a team with another style of play. We’ve had a lot of chances without finding the clinical edge.

“We conceded this goal in the last minute. It’s very harsh because I think we deserve another result.

“We needed to win this game, but it’s difficult. There’s a lot of disappointment because we tried, but I think a lot of players were tired. I think that’s normal in this busy period.

“I think we had the right mentality. They’re a difficult team to play against with their long throw-ins, free-kicks and second balls.”

Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield manager David Wagner tells BBC Sport: "It is hard to take. If you see how we concede it makes it harder. We had a good opportunity for the counter and could not finish then could not close the gaps and conceded after Jonas Lossl made a great penalty save.

"Today was a game with a lack of creativity form both sides, some shots from both sides ans set plays but it was not a good game. We defended the counter well until the stoppage time situation.

"We need more than 30 minutes after the final whistle to deal with the situation.

"We were not able to create clear cut chances and we wanted to make sure we did not conceded counter-attacks, the work an attitude the players have shown was good and in the end it is a defeat which is very difficult to take.

"I cannot think about the transfer window at the moment, we need more time to deal with this game."

Cardiff City

Cardiff defender Sol Bamba, speaking to Match of the Day:“It feels great. We knew it was coming away from home. Today we managed to get the result so we’re very happy.

“I think we played in the right areas. We don’t have the players like Man City have, for example, so we use our quality and try to do our best. You could see that today and we managed to get a result.”

On his challenge after Maddison's penalty: “Obviously I can give another penalty away which I didn’t want to do, but I managed to react quickly and clear the ball.

“I’m just happy to help the team. That’s what it’s all about and that’s how we’re going to stay in this league.”

Leicester City

Leicester defender Harry Maguire: "We had the better chances, no doubt about that. They had a game plan and hit us at the end with the goal. It worked perfectly, so fair play to them.

"We had the penalty and another four blocks which they managed to put in. It’s just one of those days where we huffed and puffed but couldn’t score.

"For the boys who have played all three games it’s obviously tough, but it’s the same for every player in the Premier League.

"We dominated the game. We had numerous chances and I can’t remember them having a clear-cut chance. They scored an unbelievable goal at the end and for them it’s great."

Cardiff City

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock, speaking to Match of the Day: “I thought we deserved it overall. We had a very good plan and looked to break when we could. Our goalkeeper didn’t have many saves, apart from the penalty.

“Other than that I thought we showed a lot of character. In the last couple of games we’ve really had to dig deep. We’ve done well against really good sides in our last two games against Palace and Leicester.

“We’ve had opportunities this season - we’ve missed penalties and everything else away from home. This was the first time away from home that we’ve deserved to win. We were the better team if I’m being honest.”

On Victor Camarasa’s goal: “He’s quite capable of doing that every week. He deserves it – he’s a super lad.”

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez speaking to Match of the Day: "I think we did well for a while then we conceded late and I think we could win the game with a bit more composure in the final pass - but overall a great effort from everyone.

"They had energy and fresh legs at the end. For us it's two of three passes on the counter where we could do better and we would have the chances.

"Against Liverpool we made mistakes, overall I was happy with the way they were working and today we had fresh legs again and I am happy with them.

On goalscorer Salomon Rondon: "If he continues scoring goals and playing like today we can win games."

On playing Man Utd next: "We know it will be tough but if we play with the same intensity as today we can compete against anyone"

Everton

Everton defender Michael Keane on whether Brighton's goal offside? "At the time a lot of the lads were not sure who the ball came off but I was right there, it came off our player, so it was not offside, he was lucky it happened to fall to him, unlucky for us.

"We didn’t start as we wanted to, they put pressure on us and got the goal. We didn’t create clear cut chances.

"They started brightly, we grew into the game, I had a chance with my head. We’ve got to take them. If we go 1-0 up, we can control the game. We had a win against Burnley and wanted to build on that.

"Maybe the loss was down to fatigue, but also they have got a good defence, solid, hard to break down. So do we so there were never going to be too many goals. Maybe fatigue played a part, on our day we could cause them problems.

"We need to put things right, ensure we start the year with a win and get up the table back to where we belong.

Fulham

Fulham manger Claudio Ranieri tells BBC Sport: "It was unbelievable. If we had to dream this match, it is important to score in the last minute and that is what we did. It was very important for the victory and the effort.

"The first half was very difficult but we could not go through the midfield and we lost a lot of balls. We did much better in the second half with Tom Cairney in the middle.

"I said to Aboubakar Kamara to leave the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic, he is the man who shoots the penalties. It is unbelievable, he did not respect me, the club, the team and crowd. I spoke with him, it is not right.

"I wanted to kill him, that is normal when one man takes a ball, only because he scored the last penalty (against Manchester United). It should be Mitrovic, that is it.

"It was a very good ball from Ryan Sessegnon, Mitrovic waited, didn't go offside and shot very well.

"Another clean sheet is good, it gives more confidence and we have to continue this way."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "We did not dominate the ball in the second half. We were wrong in the way we tried to play, too much long ball and our energy dropped in the second half.

"It was difficult to come back into the game after their equaliser. But that is football. We have had a very good run in the last few weeks and to keep that level is difficult. We tried to play a little more in the second half, but we were too direct and I think we started to pay for the effort in the other games. We are not machines. We need to understand that we cannot get ourselves in this situation.

"I think we used the ball in the wrong way and allowed them to create chances on the transitions."

A lot of teams on the move down the bottom, which is bad news for Huddersfield.

Fulham's win over the Terriers takes them up to 18th and leaves Huddersfield five points and a whole lot of goal difference away from safety.

Cardiff's win over Leicester pushes them up to 16th, level with Newcastle.

Wolves

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo: "The second half was really really good.We managed possession, had chances and goals.

"We had a lot of belief after the equaliser, I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them. It is good for the dressing room but to play like this at Wembley - the home of football - is the big thing.

"We have achieved something very special in getting to the Premier League and it has been a very special year."

Cardiff City

Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge: "It was a great save from the penalty to help the team, but the main thing for us today is the great win - our first away from home. It gives us momentum going into the new year.

"We just need to keep focusing and keep concentrating. Obviously it’s a very tough league. To keep two clean sheets in a row is outstanding. The boys have done very well.

"We take every game as it comes. We’ve got a tough game against Tottenham on New Year’s Day, but we’ll enjoy this one for now."

Fulham

Fulham match-winner Aleksandar Mitrovic tells Sky Sports: "Unbelievable. I am so tired and so happy. We deserved this, we worked hard and this is the best way to win the game, scoring in the last minute. We are very proud.

"When Ryan Sessegnon got the ball I knew he will go inside so I tried to find the space and I knew he would pass or shoot. I made the run and he decided to pass and I finished it well. I did not have luck in last game, but today I did.

"For the penalty, we had a small argument and I think it is my job for penalties. He did not think like this but I respect that. I have done the same in the past. I don't have a problem with this, he missed and that is part of football. He changed the game when he came on in the second half. We worked very hard for the win.

"Last time I said I am so unhappy I want to cry, today I want to say I am so happy I want to cry.

"It is a big three points, we kept another clean sheet and that is a big improvement for us. Today was a six points game against rivals at the bottom and it was a very important game. it gives us confidence before facing Arsenal. We need to carry on winning games and taking points."
