Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very hard but that is how it is. It was a massive game today. Everyone knows how difficult it is to go to Brighton.

"You have to be creative against a really good, organised side. It was a mature performance from my side. I really like that as this season it is quite a new skill and I'd like us to keep that.

"We learned from the first half and the second half was better. I liked the performance. It wasn't an opera of football but it was a really nice song.

"It was clear that we had the ball a lot but it is really difficult. Chris Hughton is a smart fox! They close the space perfectly. It is really difficult to stay 100% for the whole game. It is a challenge but this is a proper football game which we won and I like that.

"We have to win each game. That is how it is. We are Liverpool and we have to win football games. That's nothing new. You don't want to draw games here but you have to work in each step of the game. Try to create and if you find a way then use it.

"The only thing I didn't like was our second ball play. There were no clear clearances which would have helped."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold being injured in the warm-up: "It was a shock in that moment. It was the last situation of the warming up. He wants to play so he doesn't say immediately. On the way in we though he couldn't play so James Milner did a warm-up but it was a brilliant decision from the medical staff and Trent. He played well."

Newcastle make three changes to the side that lost to Manchester United in their last Premier League match. Most notably is the inclusion of 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff, a product of the Newcastle academy who came off the bench in the defeat at Liverpool on Boxing Day.

Newcastle: Dubravka, Yedlin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Perez, Longstaff, Hayden, Atsu, Rondon. Subs: Schar, Murphy, Fernandez, Manquillo, Joselu, Sterry, Woodman.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson speaking to Match of the Day: "We were expecting it. Brighton make it difficult at home and are defensively organised. It was important for us to keep our patience. It was about protecting on the counter-attack.

"We were just thinking about it being another opportunity to get three points for us. It was a definite penalty and then we defended really well. It is a big three points.

"Glenn Murray is a very good striker but Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk were brilliant. Overall, we are pleased with the three points."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold carrying on: "That is Trent all over. His mentality is very mature for his age. I thought he had another good, solid performance. He will probably be sore in the morning but his mentality is strong. He lasted the 90 minutes. He was struggling in the warm-up but he forgot about it and got on with it.

"The manager won't let us think about the title. We have to think about the next game. We know how important it is. We have another week to prepare for it."

  6. 'We haven't had much luck this season'published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    Burnley 2-1 Fulham

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche to MOTD: "I am very pleased, a lot of hard work has gone into that from the players. Not just physically.

"Some of our performances has been OK but details kill you at this level. Big moments make a difference, as we saw today. James Tarkowski makes a brilliant block on the line and today it stayed out.

"A lot has been asked of us this season, we have come out of a real sticky first half of the season.

"We are not inteersted in selling any of our players. I believe in all of them. We have had a bit of luck today with the own goals but we haven't had much this season."

    Crystal Palace 1-2 Watford

    Tom CleverleyImage source, Reuters

Watford's match-winner Tom Cleverley: "When you come to Selhurst Park you know you will have to battle, the games are nearly always decided by one goal or draws. Luckily I had enough quality to get the goal that won it. It was a bit unfortunate the own goal, and we are disappointed about not dealing with the first ball. Craig Cathcart has been outstanding all season we really appreciate his performances.

"I think it was a long throw and we won the second balls and it has come out to me and I took it on the volley. As soon as it left my foot I knew it was destined for the top corner.

"It is the squad we have got that helps us come back into games, people on the bench are ready to come on and help the team and we don’t let our heads drop. We can play good football or we can battle."

  8. 'We held in there'published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    FT: Brighton 0-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew it was going to be difficult. We struggled to score against them at home. We got the goal in the end and we held in there.

"It's a credit to the lads that we showed that desire to get the three points. It was frustrating as a team in the first half. They are well organised and it was tough to break them down.

"In the second half it helped us getting that goal early on and they had to attack us more which played into our hands.

"Mohamed Salah has shown he has the strength and the skill to do that. He has helped the team with his goals and the contributions.

"After a few minutes my ankle got better and I told the medical staff I just needed some strapping and some pain killers and I'd be good to go. When you get into the zone it helps.

"To be the best you have to win a lot of your games. It is a tough league and we go into every game to get a win. We're disappointed when we draw as well as lose. We're all happy and hopefully we can push on."

Patrick: Unlucky Brighton. Fortune for Liverpool, you deserved a point today.

Richard Vaughan: Red Parsley is completely correct. Too many deluded Leicester fans calling for Puel's sacking. Leicester are where they should be, and the manager is doing that.

Paul: As a Saints fan who moaned about Puel only to be suffering next season in a relegation battle,Leicester fans be careful what you wish for

Southampton forward Shane Long, speaking to Sky Sports: "We deserved the win. The two-goal advantage gave us bit of a breather, if it had been 1-1 then it might have been a different game.

"The lads at the back have done brilliant and we've had to dig deep. The confidence is coming back. We know we have the quality in the dressing room."

  11. 'Own goals were their only chances'published at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    Burnley 2-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham defender Tim Ream: "We are massively disappointed. We started really well and then conceded possession quite a bit. In the second half we showed what we are about and we were unlucky not to put one away.

"We couldn't get close in midfield, they outworked us. At this stage you can't get outworked. We conceded too many crosses as well, that's their bread and butter. Eventually they will score.

"We can look back and think what could have been but the own goals were really their only chances."

It wasn't pretty, it wasn't comfortable but Liverpool may look back on this result as a huge win in the title race. Mohamed Salah was the man to provide the goods again. It looked like a clear penalty - Pascal Gross definitely got a clump of his shirt - but Brighton will be disappointed they couldn't steal an equaliser. A very solid performance from them.

Red Parsley: Why are so many Leicester fans calling for the manager's sacking? Is it just me who sees they are 7th? Do these deluded fans think they should be challenging for the title every season?

John Daniels: Really feel for Puel. Although a loss seems likely today he always seems to be under undue pressure. I would not mind if my team was 8th.

Chris: That's yet another huge decision to go against Huddersfield this season. Incompetence or subconscious bias from the Premier League referee?
