    Aberdeen have thrown the gauntlet down to the rest of the teams near the summit of the Premiership with that thumping of Dundee.

    One point separates the top four teams and, having looked like they might be dropping out of contention, the side who have finished runners-up for the past four seasons are right back up there.

    Attention now turns to Celtic Park and Easter Road tomorrow evening.

    Rangers head to Edinburgh leading Kilmarnock on goal difference but facing a Hibs side buoyed by Sunday's win over Celtic.

    Reigning champions Celtic, meanwhile, will fancy their chances of beating Motherwell at home and improving on their third place.

  2. 'There needs to be change in January'

    Dundee manager Jim McIntyre was understandably "very disappointed" at the result.

    "You can't give away those kind of goals and expect to win," he tells BBC Scotland.

    "We give away two goal from set plays, which is not acceptable.

    "The fourth goal was offside, but it doesn't really matter because Aberdeen were comfortable tonight.

    "They were bigger than us, stronger than us, quicker than us all over the pitch.

    "But our fight will not be against Aberdeen. Our fight will be against St Mirren and Hamilton.

    "We know where we are as a squad and I know what we’ll have to do in January. We need a bit more in the dressing room. There clearly needs to be change."

    Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is "very pleased", not only with his side's performance but that the victory takes them within touching distance of his points target for the first half of the season.

    "Any time you score five goals, especially with the demand of games we've had, you are pleased," he tells BBC Scotland Sportsound.

    "We had an edge and a real intensity to our game. Really pleased to see the potency of the team.

    "Some of our stuff was terrific tonight. We had almost 20 shots tonight.

    "I am very pleased we are up to 33 points. We wanted to be on 36 points after the hearts game and we've given ourselves an opportunity to do that."

    It wasn't long ago when Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was lamenting the lack of a goalscorer.

    Suddenly, they knock five past Dundee - their biggest win of the season - and Sam Cosgrove has two of them to take the 22-year-old's tally to four in three games.

    Centre-half Andrew Considine also grabbed a double and the Dons are now level on points with third-placed Celtic, albeit the champions have two games in hand, and one behind Rangers and Kilmarnock.

    Dundee, meanwhile, hapless on the night, drop back to the bottom behind St Mirren on goal difference.
