  1. goal

GOAL: Ipswich 1-0 Millwallpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Jack Lankester (2 mins)

And an early goal at Portman Road too!

Jack Lankester finds space on the right side of the area and bends a shot into the far corner.

That's the 18-year-old's first goal for the Tractor Boys.

Maybe 2019 will see Ipswich kick-start their bid for survival.

  2. goal

GOAL: Reading 0-1 Swanseapublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Oli McBurnie (2 mins)

No messing about from Swansea, who hit the front early on at the Madejski Stadium.

Lovely cross from the right hand side swung into the penalty area and despite being sandwiched by two defenders, Oli McBurnie manages to get his head to it and power it past Anssi Jaakkola.

    Up and running.

  3. goal

GOAL: Derby 1-0 Middlesbroughpublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Harry Wilson (2 mins)

A blistering start for the Rams.

Jack Marriott threads a through ball into the box and Harry Wilson flashes a fierce first-time shot into the Boro net.

The visitors don't concede often and will have to come out now if they want to grab anything from this match.

Wigan v Sheff Utd (15:00 GMT)

It was a tricky December for Wigan Athletic, who went the whole month without registering a win in their six games last month.

At least Paul Cook's side ended a run of four straight defeats at Swansea on Saturday.

But one win in 12 in the Championship might mean Latics fans become increasingly concerned about the gap to the bottom three, which currently stands at four points.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, are just four points off the automatic promotion places and talisman Billy Sharp is back in form in front of goal.

The 32-year-old has four goals in his past three outings, which has helped the Blades to victories over Derby and Blackburn.

But United are winless in their past nine games on New Year's Day since a 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic in a top-flight meeting back in 1994.

  6. Mid-table battle in Stokepublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

Stoke v Bristol City (15:00 GMT)

    Lee JohnsonImage source, Getty Images

Just one goal separates Stoke and Bristol City in the Championship table, with the Robins a place above the Potters in 11th.

Lee Johnson's side are seven games unbeaten, including three wins, following a run of four straight defeats.

But they have not enjoyed travelling on New Year's Day for some time. They have lost 14 of their past 16 away league matches on 1 January, drawing the other two.

Their last away win on this day came in 1903, with a 1-0 success at Blackpool.

Stoke still have hopes of reaching the play-offs, starting the year seven points off the top six.

The Potters have lost just one of their past 12 games, but are two without a win heading into this one after defeat at Birmingham and a draw at Bolton.

However, Stoke have won their past three games at the Bet365 Stadium.

  7. Owls to wait for Bruce?published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

Sheff Wed v Birmingham (15:00 GMT)

It still appears that Steve Bruce will become Sheffield Wednesday's new manager at some stage, but BBC Radio 5 live's Mark Clemmit believes it may be a little while before the former Aston Villa boss takes charge at Hillsborough...

  8. Preening Owls welcome rising Bluespublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

Sheff Wed v Birmingham (15:00 GMT)

Results have improved markedly for Sheffield Wednesday since sacking Dutch boss Jos Luhukay on 21 December.

Two wins and a draw under caretaker Lee Bullen have lifted the Owls to 16th in the table.

In fact, only a late West Brom equaliser on Saturday denied Wednesday a third consecutive win.

In-form Birmingham travel to Hillsborough on the back of a four-match unbeaten run.

Garry Monk has inspired Blues to seventh in the table, and victory today could leave them one point off the play-offs.

  9. Out-of-form pair meet at Rotherhampublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Rotherham v Preston (15:00 GMT)

    Alex NeilImage source, Getty Images

Just like in Reading, it's been a bleak winter so far for Rotherham fans.

The Millers are also nine without a win, and have picked up just one win in their past 18 league games.

Paul Warne's side have drawn 10 of those 18 though, which kept them above the bottom three until defeat by Bristol City last time out saw them slip to 22nd on goal difference.

Preston will be hoping not to get drawn into trouble themselves, with a recent three-match winless run leaving Alex Neil's men seven points above the relegation zone.

The Lilywhites have something to build on after drawing 1-1 at home against Aston Villa on Saturday.

  12. Transfer season startspublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Buy! Buy! Buy!

    Jarrod BowenImage source, Getty Images

Andy Williams sang that Christmas was The Most Wonderful Time of The Year.

But we all know that we all take more joy from the transfer window being open.

And - guess what - now it is 1 January all EFL clubs can bolster their squads by making signings again!

The speculation and transfer chat has already started.

Hull boss Nigel Adkins says he wants to keep hold of forward Jarrod Bowen, who has scored 10 goals in 25 outings this season and has apparently attracted the interest of Tottenham.

Don't worry folks, there will be much more gossip to come before the month is out. Catch up with January's done deals here.

    Quiz time!

Depending on who you support, 2018 was a brilliant/nailbiting/disastrous year in the EFL.

As we begin the final year of the decade, why not test your knowledge of the past 12 months in the Football League?

Will you storm to success like Wolves or disappear with a whimper like Chesterfield?

Twelve questions... how will you get on?

  14. Lincoln on course for promotion?published at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    League Two preview

There is already one game under way in League Two.

Mid-table Grimsby are hosting third-placed Mansfield, and the visitors lead 1-0 with less than 10 minutes left.

Lincoln City will be aiming to preserve their six-point lead at the top of League Two when they host Port Vale, while second-placed MK Dons host struggling Cambridge.

Bottom club Notts County, who are winless in three, travel to mid-table Oldham and Sol Campbell's Macclesfield entertain Tranmere.

The Silkmen will move out of the relegation zone if they win and Cambridge suffer defeat.

Here's the fixture list in full:

    • Bury v Crewe
    • Crawley v Colchester
    • Forest Green v Northampton
    • Lincoln v Port Vale
    • Macclesfield v Tranmere
    • MK Dons v Cambridge
    • Morecambe v Carlisle
    • Oldham v Notts Co
    • Stevenage v Newport
    • Swindon v Exeter
    • Yeovil v Cheltenham
  15. Can Gomes get Royals firing?published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Reading v Swansea (15:00 GMT)

    Jose GomesImage source, Getty Images

It's strange to think Reading were a game away from promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2017, after finishing third in the table.

The Royals lost out to Huddersfield in the play-off final that May and, since then, have dropped like a stone.

They stumbled to a 20th-placed finish last season and Paul Clement paid the price for poor results when he lost his job on 6 December.

Now nine without a win and 23rd in the table, Portuguese Jose Gomes has been charged with getting the Berkshire club back on track.

He picked up his first point at QPR on Saturday but needs to get Reading, who have failed to score in their last three, firing again to have a hope of survival.

Visitors Swansea are re-acclimatising to life back in the Championship following a seven-year stay in the top flight.

The Welsh club are in mid-table, but will be aiming to end a three-match winless run.

    The EFL in 2018

The start of a new year gives a chance to reflect on the one which has just passed.

There were some stunning games last year, but also plenty of quirky action off the pitch too.

Can you remember who had a cabbage thrown at them, who compared the managerial merry-go-round to dating app Tinder, and which boss bemoaned his players not acting like crazed raccoons?

If you want to reminisce on the year that was, our esteemed colleague Ian Woodcock has put together this look back at 2018 in the EFL.

  17. Will Leeds add to Karanka speculation?published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (15:00 GMT)

Leeds United playersImage source, Rex Features

Leeds United suffered a setback in their automatic promotion bid on Saturday, losing 2-0 at home to a rejuvenated Hull City.

That brought an end to a seven-match winning run for the Whites, which helped give Marcelo Bielsa's side a three-point lead at the top and a five-point cushion to third-placed West Brom.

But the Argentine has often faced criticism that his sides burn out in the second half of the campaign - so can Leeds last the course as they aim to end their 15-year exile from the Premier League?

They go to draw specialists Nottingham Forest.

The Tricky Trees have a division-high 12 draws - some going as they only had eight stalemates in the whole of last season.

A five-game winless run has seen the Reds drop to six points off the play-offs, and boss Aitor Karanka has said speculation about his future has had an adverse affect on his players.

  18. Ipswich struggles continue as Millwall risepublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Ipswich v Millwall (15:00 GMT)

    Paul LambertImage source, Getty Images

Over Christmas it is traditional to think about those less fortunate. And, let's be fair, Ipswich Town have endured a torrid season.

Bottom of the table and seven points from safety, there was little post-Christmas cheer around Suffolk as the Tractor Boys lost at QPR and Middlesbrough.

Boss Paul Lambert has won just one of his 10 games in charge since taking over in late October and it looks like Ipswich's demise will be long, drawn out and painful.

They have the worst defence in the second tier, having conceded 43 times in their 25 league outings.

Today's visitors Millwall have had a mini-renaissance which has lifted them out of the danger zone.

Back-to-back 1-0 wins over Reading and Forest has seen the Lions move three points above 22nd place.

But Neil Harris' side are yet to win on the road this season, losing nine of their 12 games away from The Den.

  19. 'I do like to be beside the seaside'published at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Blackpool v Sunderland (15:00 GMT)

Not content with a season's best record for an EFL attendance on Boxing Day with 46,000-plus at the Stadium of Light for the visit of Bradford, Sunderland fans are pretty much taking over Blackpool this afternoon on their travels.

Fish and chips, sandy beaches and maybe a few stomach-churning rides on the amusements are the perfect antidote to that post-NYE hangover.

It could well be an eerie atmosphere at Bloomfield Road as many protesting Tangerines fans have been boycotting their games, and 8,000 Mackems will flood the rest of the ground.

    Fair play.

  20. Can Pompey stay at summit?published at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    League One preview

League One leaders Portsmouth suffered a setback at Gillingham on 26 December but bounced back with a thumping 5-2 win at Fleetwood on Saturday.

Pompey welcome struggling AFC Wimbledon, who are four points from safety, while second-placed Luton Town welcome play-off hopefuls Barnsley.

Sunderland, with just one defeat in their past 15 in the league, go to Blackpool.

Towards the bottom, Bradford and Scunthorpe could move out of the relegation zone if they pick up wins today.

Here's the run-down of games in the third tier:

    • Blackpool v Sunderland
    • Bradford v Accrington
    • Bristol Rovers v Burton
    • Charlton v Walsall
    • Doncaster v Rochdale
    • Luton v Barnsley
